1968 Campeonato Carioca
The 1968 edition of the Campeonato Carioca kicked off on March 9, 1968 and ended on June 9, 1968. It was organized by FCF (Federação Carioca de Futebol, or Carioca Football Federation). Twelve teams participated. Botafogo won the title for the 14th time. no teams were relegated. System The tournament would be divided in two stages: * First round: The twelve teams were divided into two groups of six, and each team played in a single round-robin format against all other teams. The four best teams in each group qualified to the Second round. * Second round: The remaining eight teams all played in a single round-robin format against each other. The team with the most points won the title. The Campeonato Carioca (Carioca Championship), officially known as Campeonato Estadual do Rio de Janeiro (Port., Rio de Janeiro State Championship), was started in 1906 and is the annual football championship in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is under the authority of the FERJ or FFERJ (Football Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro). The first season of the ''Campeonato Carioca'' was played in 1906. It was predated by: the Campeonato Paulista of São Paulo and the Campeonato Baiano of Bahia. Rivalries amongst four of the most prestigious Brazilian teams (Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense and Vasco da Gama) have marked the history of the competition. Armando Marques (referee)
Armando Nunes Castanheira da Rosa Marques (6 February 1930 – 16 July 2014), was a Brazilian football referee. He was the Brazilian representative referee at the 1966 and 1974 FIFA World Cups. Professional Considered by many the best referee in Brazilian football while he was active, whistled professionally from August 13, 1961 to May 8, 1977. From 1961 to 1963, his career passed in anonymity, nobody knew Armando Marques. Until August 15, 1963, when they faced each other at Estádio do Pacaembu, São Paulo and Santos. São Paulo opened the scoring in the 5th minute through Faustino. Pelé equalized in the 21st minute. But in the final eight minutes of the first half, everything happened. Benê scored São Paulo's second goal in the 37th minute and Sabino increased it to 3-1 in the 40th minute. That's when the confusion started. José Márcio Pereira da Silva (born 17 November 1948), better known in the United States as Zequinha is a Brazilian former footballer, who played in Brazil and the United States. Biography Born in Leopoldina, Minas Gerais, Zequinha started his career in 1967 at Flamengo and he left to play for Botafogo two years later. After six season there, he then made the transfer to Grêmio in 1975 and stayed on for three years, before moving to São Paulo FC for one season. With the popularity of the North American Soccer League at its zenith, Zequinha moved to the U.S. and joined the Dallas Tornado in 1979. Rather than go home during the off-season, he chose to play indoor soccer in the MISL for the Detroit Lightning. He played two more years in Dallas before the team was merged with the Tampa Bay Rowdies after the 1981 season.
