1967 Western Samoan General Election
General elections were held in Western Samoa on 25 February 1967. All candidates ran as independents and voting was restricted to Matai and citizens of European origin ("individual voters"), with the Matai electing 45 MPs and Europeans two. Following the election, Fiame Mata'afa Faumuina Mulinu'u II remained Prime Minister. Campaign A total of 126 candidates contested the 45 Samoan seats, with five running in the individual voter seats. Although voting was restricted to ''matais'', the ability of traditional chiefs to create new matai led to significant changes in voter demographics in some areas, with the number of ''matais'' more than doubling since 1961. In Vaisigano No. 1 constituency, the number of ''matais'' increased from 139 in 1965 to over 1,400 by the 1967 elections. Trucks had been sent out to collect people and register them as ''matai'', including many women, who were traditionally rarely made ''matai''. Fono
The Legislative Assembly ( sm, Fono Aoao Faitulafono a Samoa), also known as the Parliament of Samoa ( sm, Palemene o Samoa), is the national legislature of Samoa, seated at Apia, where the country's central administration is situated. Samoan Parliament is composed of two parts: the O le Ao o le Malo (head of state) and the Legislative Assembly. In the Samoan language, the Legislative Assembly of Samoa is sometimes referred to as the Samoan Fono while the ''government'' of the country is referred to as the Malo. The word ''fono'' is a Samoan and Polynesian term for councils or meetings great and small and applies to national assemblies and legislatures, as well as local village councils. Tofilau Eti Alesana
Tofilau Eti Alesana, AC, born Aualamalefalelima Alesana (4 June 1924 – 19 March 1999) was a Samoan politician who served as the fifth prime minister of Samoa from 1982 to 1985, and again from 1988 until his resignation in 1998. Elections In Samoa
At the national level, Samoa elects a legislature. The Fono or ''Legislative Assembly'' has 51 members elected for a five-year term from 51 electoral constituencies. Prior to 2019, the Legislative Assembly has 49 members, 47 members out of the '' matai'' (traditional heads of families) six of whom are elected from two-seat constituencies and 35 from single-seat constituencies, and 2 members by the non-Samoan nationals. The head of state is elected for a five-year term by the Fono. The voting age in Samoa is 21. Samoa has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties.
