1967 VFA Season
The 1967 Victorian Football Association season was the 86th season of the top division of the Australian rules football competition, and the seventh season of second division competition. The Division 1 premiership was won by the Dandenong Football Club, after it defeated Port Melbourne in a controversial Grand Final on 24 September by 25 points; it was Dandenong's first Division 1 premiership. The Division 2 premiership was won by Oakleigh, in its first season after relegation from Division 1. Division 1 The Division 1 home-and-home season was played over 18 rounds; the top four then contested the finals under the Page–McIntyre system. Dandenong Football Club
Dandenong Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Based in the Melbourne suburb of Dandenong, the Redlegs wore navy blue and red as their club colours. Club history From 1953 to 1957 the club played in the Federal Football League. Success was immediate by winning the 1953 flag. Near success continued by being runner-up in 1954 and 1955, a third in 1956 and fifth in 1957. In all 72 wins compared to 25 losses and a draw. VFA History Dandenong joined the Victorian Football Association from the Federal League for the 1958 season, and found itself in Division 2 when then Association was partitioned in 1961. Prahran Assumption Football Club (), nicknamed The Two Blues, is an Australian rules football club based at Toorak Park in Orrong Road between High Street and Malvern Road, Armadale, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The club is currently in Division 1 of the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Toorak Park
Toorak Park is a cricket and Australian rules football arena in the Melbourne suburb of Armadale, Victoria, Australia. It is the home ground of the Prahran Football Club and Old Xaverians Football Club of the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) and Prahran Cricket Club, which plays in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition. The current capacity of the venue is 15,000. Toorak Park opened in 1893 when it was used by Hawksburn Cricket Club (later Prahran). The Prahran Football Club in the Victorian Football League, Victorian Football Association began home matches at the venue in 1899, and used it as its home base until it left the Association after 1994. Old Xaverians moved there for the 1995 VAFA season and now share the oval with Prahran, which now also plays in the VAFA. Coburg City Oval
Coburg City Oval (also currently known as Piranha Park due to naming rights) is an Australian rules football and cricket stadium located in Coburg, Australia. It is home to the Coburg Football Club in the Victorian Football League, and the Coburg Cricket Club. The oval was officially opened in 1915. Following the Coburg Football Club's admission to the Victorian Football Association in 1925, the grandstand was constructed, and was officially opened in March 1926. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the venue was one of the VFA's finals venues, and it hosted the final in 1932. It later hosted the 1967 Division 2 finals series. In 1965, the VFL's North Melbourne Football Club moved its playing and training base from the Arden Street Oval to Coburg City Oval. Skinner Reserve
Skinner Reserve is an Australian rules football stadium located on Churchill Avenue, Braybrook, Victoria. It is most notable as the former home ground of the Sunshine Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Prior to Skinner Reserve being developed as a football ground, the primary sports venue in the City of Sunshine was Selwyn Park, Albion. In 1964, the Sunshine Council agreed to lease Selwyn Park to the George Cross soccer club, which was playing in Victoria's top level soccer league at the time; but, the Sunshine Football Club, as well as the local baseball and sub-district cricket clubs, still had three years to run on their lease. To secure agreement from the Sunshine Football Club to end the lease, the Sunshine Council committed to developing a new VFA-standard venue at Skinner Reserve. Denis Dalton
Denis Dalton (born 10 October 1942) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1960s and a former international lawn bowler. Australian rules An Old Paradian, Dalton was used mostly as a rover in his two seasons at Collingwood. He appeared in the 1964 VFL Grand Final and kicked a goal from the forward pocket, in a four-point loss. Dalton later played for Preston in the Victorian Football Association, and finished equal-third for the J. J. Liston Trophy in 1967. Alan Osborne
Alan Leslie Osborne (born 7 December 1940) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1960s. Osborne could play in a variety of positions, from forward, ruckman to back pocket. He spent just two seasons at St Kilda and made nine of his eleven appearances in the 1962 VFL season. A VFA representative in the 1966 Hobart Carnival, Osborne previously played for the league in 1961, 1964 and 1965. He was a premiership player at Dandenong in 1967 where he was charged, but exonerated, of kicking, in the Grand Final. Hugh Mitchell (Australian Footballer)
Hugh Mitchell (born 22 November 1934) is a former Australian rules footballer and coach who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and Dandenong in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) during the 1950s and 1960s. Early career at Essendon Recruited from the local junior team the Moonee Imperials, Mitchell was so impressive with the Essendon thirds (under-19s) in his first season that he was promoted to the firsts; and, apart from times when injured (he was prone to leg injuries), he played as a firsts regular. He played 77 consecutive games for the firsts from 1954 to 1958. Eddie Melai
Eduard Herbert Melai (28 February 1941 – 28 April 2004) was an Australian rules footballer most notable for his career with the Dandenong Football Club in the Victorian Football Association during the 1960s and 1970s. Melai played fifty games with reserves in the Victorian Football League during the early 1960s, and was part of Geelong's 1963 reserves premiership team, but he did not play a senior game for the club. He was cleared to , and played seven senior matches there during the 1964 season. In 1965, Melai crossed to Dandenong in the Victorian Football Association without a clearance. Alan Morrow
Alan G. Morrow (born 29 November 1936) is a former Australian rules footballer in the VFL. A hard working tough ruckman who took on a ruck role when Carl Ditterich missed the 1966 Grand Final due to suspension. St Kilda controversially recruited Morrow and Bill Stephenson from Sale, illegally offering money. Morrow was injured early in the 1965 Grand Final, the favoured Saints losing the match in part due to missing Morrow. The Grand Final win in 1966 was his last VFL game. Peter Bedford
Peter Lawrence Anthony "Wheels" Bedford (born 11 April 1947) is a former Australian Rules footballer and first-class cricketer. As a footballer, he is best known for his time at South Melbourne, where he won Victorian Football League's (VFL's) Brownlow Medal in 1970 as the fairest and the best in the competition. Bedford began his football career at Christian Brothers College Victoria Parade, East Melbourne. He began his senior career in the Victorian Football Association, where he played at Port Melbourne Football Club. He was part of the Port Melbourne team which lost the controversial 1967 VFA Grand Final against Dandenong. He played 52 senior games with Port Melbourne during this phase of his career.
