1967 Melbourne Cup
The 1967 Melbourne Cup was a two-mile handicap horse race which took place on Tuesday, 7 November 1967. The race, run over , at Flemington Racecourse. The race was won by the New Zealand bred stallion Red Handed, trained by Bart Cummings and ridden by Roy Higgins. The runner up was Red Crest and third place went to Floodbird. The winning margin was only a neck and a further neck to third place. This was the third win in a row in the great race by Bart Cummings who went on to record twelve Melbourne Cup winners. Purchased from Pirongia Stud in New Zealand, Red Handed was sired by the French stallion, Le Filou, and his dam Red Might (NZ) was by Red Mars (GB). His off foreleg was club-footed and the nerves on one side of his head were paralysed due to being kicked by another horse. The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday of November and is known locally as "the race that stops the nation". The Melbourne Cup has a long tradition, with the first race held in 1861. Flemington Racecourse
Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable for hosting the Melbourne Cup, which is the world's richest handicap and the world's richest 3200-metre horse race. The racecourse is situated on low alluvial flats, next to the Maribyrnong River. The area was first used for horse racing in March 1840. Red Handed
Red Handed (1962−1990) was a New-Zealand bred, Australian-trained Thoroughbred racehorse, who won the 1967 Melbourne Cup. He was sired by the French stallion, Le Filou. His New Zealand bred dam, Red Might, was by Red Mars (GB). The horse was purchased in New Zealand relatively cheaply by Bart Cummings for the sum of 870 guineas. This was due to the horse having a club foot and a paralysed ear (an injury incurred as a result of being kicked in the head by another horse as a yearling, paralysing the nerves down one side of his face). Roy Higgins (jockey)
Roy Henry Higgins MBE (5 June 19388 March 2014) was an Australian jockey who rode from the late 1950s to the early 1980s. His talent in the saddle was to later earn him the nickname "The Professor". Early life Higgins was born in Koondrook, Victoria and grew up in the southern New South Wales town of Deniliquin where, in 1953, he was apprenticed to local horse trainer Jim Watters. Career Despite a constant battle with his weight, Higgins won almost every major race on the Australian calendar. He rode a total of 2312 winners during his career and won the Melbourne Jockeys' Premiership a record-equalling 11 times. His first premiership win was in the 1964/65 racing season. Higgins won the Melbourne Cup twice, on Light Fingers in 1965 and Red Handed in 1967, both for trainer Bart Cummings, one Caulfield Cup, two W. S. Bart Cummings
James Bartholomew Cummings (14 November 1927 – 30 August 2015), also known by his initials J. B. Cummings, was one of the most successful Australian racehorse trainers. He was known as the Cups King, referring to the Melbourne Cup, as he won 'the race that stops a nation' a record twelve times. During his lifetime Cummings was considered an Australian cultural icon and an Australian National Living Treasure. His status as a racing icon in the 20th century was generally considered equivalent to that of Etienne L. de Mestre in the 19th century. The 1966 Melbourne Cup was a two-mile handicap horse race which took place on Tuesday, 1 November 1966. The race, run over , at Flemington Racecourse. The race was won by the gelding Galilee, trained by Bart Cummings and ridden by John Miller. The runner up was Light Fingers also trained by Bart who had won the 1965 Melbourne Cup. Third place went to Duo. The winning margin was 2 lengths and a 1/2 head to third place. This race was the second of a record twelve Melbourne Cup winners for Bart and also the second of the five times he trained the quinella. Galilee (Alcimedes-Galston, by Balloch) was bred by Trelawney Stud in Cambridge, New Zealand. He had previously won the Caulfield Cup and went on to win the 1967 Sydney Cup. Bill Collins (racecaller)
William Henry Collins OAM (23 September 1928 – 14 June 1997) was an Australian racecaller and radio and television personality who earned the reputation for being able to accurately call the winner of even the closest of races. Known as "The Accurate One", he was well known for his call of the Melbourne Cup each year. One of his most notable commentaries was the 1986 Cox Plate, dubbed the " Race of the Century". Collins also called important races internationally including the UK, US, South Africa, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore. Collins died on 14 June 1997 from cancer. A handicap race in horse racing is a race in which horses carry different weights, allocated by the handicapper. A better horse will carry a heavier weight, to give it a disadvantage when racing against slower horses. The skill in betting on a handicap race lies in predicting which horse can overcome its handicap. Light Fingers
Light Fingers (1961−1988) was a New Zealand bred thoroughbred racehorse who won the Melbourne Cup in 1965. In 2017 Light Fingers was inducted to the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Background The lightly built chestnut was by the highly successful sire of stayers, Le Filou, from Cuddlesome by Red Mars (GB) by Hyperion (GB). She was originally called Close Embrace in New Zealand, but the Australian registrar would not allow that name to be used. Trained by Bart Cummings, Light Fingers would become the first of his 12 Melbourne Cup winners. Cummings had tried to buy the filly on a visit to New Zealand but was unsuccessful.
