1961 Ireland Rugby Union Tour Of South Africa
1961 Ireland rugby union tour of South Africa. Between 1906 and 1960 South Africa had played Ireland on five occasions. However all of these games had been played in Ireland. In 1960 South Africa had beaten Ireland 8–3 at Lansdowne Road. The following year Ireland embarked on their first tour of South Africa. Among the touring party was Tony O'Reilly who had previously toured South Africa with the British Lions in 1955. The tour began with a full international at Newlands Stadium which Ireland lost 24–8. Tom Kiernan scored all of Ireland's points with a try, a conversion and a penalty. Four members of this touring party – Niall Brophy, Tom Kiernan, Syd Millar and Bill Mulcahy – would return to South Africa with the British Lions in 1962. Lansdowne Football Club
Lansdowne Football Club, also sometimes referred to as Lansdowne Rugby Football Club, is a rugby union team based in Dublin, Ireland. It was founded in 1872 by Henry Dunlop as the ''Irish Champion Athletic Club''. Its senior team currently plays in Division 1A of the All-Ireland League. The club's playing colours are black, red and yellow hoops, with navy shorts. Lansdowne have won the Leinster Senior Cup a record 28 times, winning it for the first in 1891. Lansdowne won the All Ireland League for the first time in March 2013 and also won the Fraser McMullen cup in the same season. Lansdowne completed the "All Ireland Double" again in May 2015 winning the All Ireland League and the Fraser McMullen again. St Mary's College Rugby Football Club is a rugby union club based in South Dublin, Ireland, playing in Division 1B of the All-Ireland League. The club was founded in 1900 by former pupils of St. Mary's College, Dublin and was originally known as Old St Mary's. They club won the Leinster Senior Cup for the first time in 1958. In 2000 they won the AIB League for the first time under the captaincy of Trevor Brennan. Kenneth George Goodall (23 February 1947 – 17 August 2006) was an Irish rugby union and rugby league player. He was an Irish international and British Lions player and vice principal at Faughan Valley High School, which is now part of Lisneal College. He switched codes in 1970 to play for the Cumbrian rugby league club, Workington Town. He was educated at Foyle College and then read chemical engineering at Newcastle University. He made his début on the rugby pitch in a match against Australia on 21 January 1967 and subsequently played for Ireland in 19 successive matches until 14 March 1970. He was a member of City of Derry R.F.C., played for Newcastle University, club rugby for Winlaton Vulcans RFC in West Gateshead before playing for Workington. Mick Doyle (rugby Union)
Mick Doyle (13 October 1941 – 11 May 2004) was an Irish rugby union international player and coach. Youth and playing career Doyle was born in Castleisland, County Kerry, and began playing rugby union at Newbridge College, County Kildare. He went on to study veterinary science at University College Dublin, who he also represented at rugby. He made his Ireland debut against France on 23 January 1965, scoring a try in the game. While representing Ireland he also studied at Cambridge University where he gained a Blue in the 1965 Varsity match against the Oxford University RFC. Doyle also studied at the University of Edinburgh and played club rugby for Edinburgh Wanderers before returning to Ireland. He went on to earn the distinction of never being dropped during his 20-cap international career as a flanker. Jerry Walsh
Jeremiah Charles "Jerry" Walsh (born 3 November 1938 in Cork, Ireland) was a international rugby union footballer. He was capped twenty-six times by Ireland as a centre between 1960 and 1967. That Walsh's prowess was mainly defensive was shown by his scoring record: it was not until his 26th appearance that he managed a try for Ireland. But the occasion, that famous victory at Sydney Cricket Ground, could scarcely have been bettered. With that he retired, in order better to pursue his career as a doctor. Walsh was selected for the 1966 British & Irish Lions tour to Australia and New Zealand, but did not play in any of the internationals as he returned home early from Australia due to the serious illness of his father .
