The 1966 U.S. National Championships (now known as the US Open) was a tennis tournament that took place on the outdoor grass courts at the West Side Tennis Club, Forest Hills in New York City, United States. The tournament ran from 1 September until 11 September. It was the 86th staging of the U.S. National Championships, and the fourth Grand Slam tennis event of 1966. Grand Slam (tennis)
The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam". The Grand Slam tournaments, also referred to as majors, are the world's four most important annual professional tennis tournaments. John Newcombe
John David Newcombe AO OBE (born 23 May 1944) is an Australian former professional tennis player. He is one of the few men to have attained a world No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles. At the majors, he won seven singles titles, a former record 17 men's doubles titles, and two mixed doubles titles. He also contributed to five Davis Cup titles for Australia during an age when the Davis Cup was deemed as significant as the majors. ''Tennis'' magazine rated him the 10th best male player of the period 1965–2005. Biography Newcombe played several sports as a boy before devoting himself to tennis. Newcombe's powerful serve and volley was the backbone of his attacking game. He frequently came up with a second-serve ace. The 1967 Australian Championships was a tennis tournament that took place on outdoor Grass courts at the Memorial Drive, Adelaide, Australia from 20 to 30 January. Ed Rubinoff
Edward 'Ed' Rubinoff (born July 12, 1935) is an American male former tennis player who was active in the 1960s. He won the 1952 singles title at the Orange Bowl junior tennis tournament, and the 1953 mixed doubles title the following year. At the US Open, he was a mixed doubles finalist three times. At the 1969 Maccabiah Games in Israel, he won a gold medal in mixed doubles with Julie Heldman. Rubinoff played collegiate tennis for the Miami Hurricanes at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Biography Rubinoff was born in Brooklyn, New York and at age 10 moved to Miami Beach, Florida. He became captain of the Miami Beach Senior High School tennis team, and in 1952 won the National Scholastic singles and doubles titles. He received a full scholarship to the University of Miami. Carol Hanks Aucamp (born April 2, 1943) is a retired tennis player who played in the 1960s. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Accomplishments She was ranked as high as No. 5 in the United States (1964), and was ranked 10th in 1960, 11th in 1961, 12th in 1962 and 7th in 1963. She won the U.S. Indoor Singles title in 1963, the U.S. Hardcourt Singles title in 1962, and the Cincinnati singles title in 1960. She also was a singles finalist in Cincinnati in 1959. Billie Jean King (née Moffitt; born November 22, 1943) is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. King won 39 major titles: 12 in singles, 16 in women's doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles. King was a member of the victorious United States team in seven Federation Cups and nine Wightman Cups. For three years, she was the U.S. captain in the Federation Cup. King is an advocate of gender equality and has long been a pioneer for equality and social justice. Rosemary "Rosie" Casals (born September 16, 1948) is an American former professional tennis player. Casals earned her reputation as a rebel in the tennis world when she began competing in the early 1960s. During a tennis career that spanned more than two decades, she won more than 90 titles and was crucial to many of the changes in women's tennis during the 1960s and 1970s. Dennis Ralston
Richard Dennis Ralston (July 27, 1942 – December 6, 2020) was an American professional tennis player whose active career spanned the 1960s and 1970s. As a young player, he was coached by tennis pro Pancho Gonzales. He attended the University of Southern California (USC) and won NCAA championships under its coach George Toley. He and partner Bill Bond (tennis), Bill Bond captured the NCAA doubles title in 1964.
