The 1966 Brownlow Medal was the 39th year the award was presented to the player adjudged the fairest and best player during the Victorian Football League (VFL) home and away season. Ian Stewart of the St Kilda Football Club won the medal by polling twenty-one votes during the 1966 VFL season. Ian Stewart (Australian Rules Footballer)
Ian Harlow Stewart (né Cervi; born 14 July 1943) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the St. Kilda Football Club and Richmond Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He later coached and before returning to St. Kilda to serve as general manager. Stewart is one of only four men to win the Brownlow Medal three times (the others being Haydn Bunton Sr., Dick Reynolds, and Bob Skilton), and the only one to do so at two different clubs; he is also the most recent player to have achieved three Brownlow Medals. He was an inaugural inductee into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996 and was elevated to Legend status the following year. Neville Crowe
Neville Crowe (1 June 1937 – 2 September 2016) was an Australian rules footballer who represented in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1950s and 1960s. He also served as club president from 1987 to 1993, and was at the forefront of the ''Save Our Skins'' campaign in 1990, which saved the club from financial ruin. In the 1967 Second Semi-final, Crowe was reported for allegedly striking ruckman John Nicholls (footballer), John Nicholls, and suspended. He subsequently missed Richmond's drought-breaking premiership victory in the 1967 VFL Grand Final, and announced his retirement shortly afterward. Crowe's "phantom punch" is regarded as one of the most unlucky moments in VFL/AFL history. Crowe retired at the end of 2008 from working at the club, finally ending his involvement that had extended to over 50 years. Brian Dixon (Australian Footballer)
Brian James Dixon (born 20 May 1936) is a former Australian rules footballer and Victorian politician. Dixon played 252 VFL games for Melbourne between 1954 and 1968, playing mostly on the wing. He played in five premierships, winning Melbourne's best and fairest in 1960, while in 1961 he was selected in the All-Australian team and he also won the Tassie Medal for his performances at the 1961 Brisbane Carnival. In 2000 he was named in Melbourne's Team of the Century. Despite still playing football for Melbourne, he entered parliament in 1964, as the member for the now abolished seat of St Kilda, representing the Liberal Party. Being from the moderate wing of the party he clashed with then Premier Henry Bolte, especially over the hanging of Ronald Ryan which Dixon strongly opposed. Norm Brown
Norman Brown (6 August 1943 – 1 December 2022) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the VFL. Football Fitzroy (VFL) Brown joined Fitzroy from North Heidelberg in 1962. Known for his size (191 cm), physical strength and courage, he was not particularly pretty to watch. Errol Hutchesson
Errol Hutchesson (born 7 September 1939) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Hutchesson came to Collingwood from Jeparit and played the first three games of the 1958 season before breaking his leg. Collingwood went on to win the premiership with Hutchesson on the sidelines but he appeared on the wing in their losing 1960 and 1966 Grand Final teams. John Goold
John Goold (born 27 June 1941) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1960s. Family John William Crosbie-Goold was born on 27 June 1941. He married Joanna Darling Baillieu in March 1968. Education He attended Melbourne Grammar School, as a boarder, for 11 years. Football Recruited from Healesville. Goold was a half back and played in two Carlton premiership sides. The first in 1968 saw him line up at centre half back and the second came two years later in the 1970 VFL Grand Final which would be his last league game. Hassa Mann
Harold Peter "Hassa" Mann (born 09 October 1940) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for and captained Melbourne in the VFL during the 1960s. He earned the name Hassa when he was a toddler, from his cousin and future Melbourne footballer Len Mann. A centreman, Mann was recruited from Rutherglen, Victoria and made his debut for Melbourne in their premiership season of 1959. He was a premiership player again the following season and went on to become the club captain in 1965, a position he kept for four seasons. Mann finished in the top 10 of the Brownlow Medal count four times, including placing equal 7th in 1966 and equal 5th in 1967. Denis Marshall (footballer)
Deniston Clive Marshall (born 17 October 1940) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL) and in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from the 1950s to the 1970s. Early life and playing career Born in Fremantle, Western Australia, Marshall was already a star while playing for the Mosman Park Juniors. His grandfather, Gordon Tuxford, had captained in the 1920s. Marshall made his senior debut with in 1958. He represented his State in that first year. He went on to represent Western Australia 14 times during his career — and represented Victoria a further eight times in interstate matches. Darrel Baldock
Darrel John Baldock AM (29 September 1938 – 2 February 2011) was an Australian sportsman and state politician. He played Australian rules football for the St Kilda Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), East Devonport Football Club and Latrobe Football Club in the North West Football Union (NWFU), and New Norfolk Football Club in the Tasmanian Australian National Football League (TANFL). He was also a handy cricketer, successful racehorse trainer and served in the Tasmanian House of Assembly. Nicknamed "The Doc" and "Mr Magic", Baldock is a legend in the Australian Football Hall of Fame. John Sharrock
John Sharrock (born 16 February 1944) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the VFL during the 1960s. Football Sharrock played most of his career as a half forward flanker and was a premiership player in 1963, his first season at Geelong. On 6 July 1963 he was a member of the Geelong team that were comprehensively and unexpectedly beaten by Fitzroy, 9.13 (67) to 3.13 (31) in the 1963 Miracle Match. Due to an injury to Roy West, he spent the first half of 1966 playing at fullback before moving to centre-half forward for the second half of the season. He had his best season, finishing third in the Brownlow Medal count. In 1968 he suffered a career ending knee injury during an Inter-League game and despite having represented Victoria at interstate football earlier in the season it would be his last year in the game.
