Luther Tucker
Luther Tucker (January 20, 1936 – June 18, 1993) was an American blues guitarist. While soft-spoken and shy, Tucker made his presence known through his unique and clearly recognizable guitar style. Tucker helped to define the music known as Chicago blues, but played everything from blues to soul, rock, jazz and gospel, when given the chance. While never achieving the fame and notoriety of some of his contemporaries, he was considered a great guitarist whether playing his own lead style or playing on the recordings of B.B. King, Mel Brown, Pat Hare, or Elmore James. He is considered one of the most prominent rhythm guitarists of Chicago blues along with Eddie Taylor, Jody Williams and Freddie Robinson. He variously worked with Little Walter, Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, The James Cotton Blues Band and Elvin Bishop. Career Early years Tucker was born in Memphis, Tennessee. His father, a carpenter, built Tucker his first guitar, but his first real guitar was a Se ...

Early life Pearson was born Columbus Calvin Pearson Jr. in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, to Columbus Calvin and Emily Pearson. It was recorded on November 26, 1964, at Bell Sound Studios in New York City, and was released in 1965 by ESP-Disk as the fourth item in their catalog, following Albert Ayler's ''Spiritual Unity'' and Pharoah Sanders's '' Pharoah's First''. It features John Tchicai on alto saxophone, Roswell Rudd on trombone, Lewis Worrell on bass, and Milford Graves on percussion. In addition, LeRoi Jones recites his controversial poem "Black Dada Nihilismus" on one track. The album was recorded roughly two months after the group, calling itself "The John Tchicai Quartet," participated in the "October Revolution in Jazz" festival organized by Bill Dixon, and roughly one month before they played in the "Four Days in December" festival, where, calling themselves the "Roswell Rudd - John Tchicai Quartet," they shared a bill with Sun Ra. New York Art Quartet
The New York Art Quartet was a free jazz ensemble, originally made up of saxophonist John Tchicai, trombonist Roswell Rudd, drummer Milford Graves and bassist Lewis Worrell, that came into existence in 1964 in New York City. Worrell was later replaced by various other bassists, including Reggie Workman, Finn Von Eyben, Harold Dodson, Eddie Gómez, Steve Swallow, and Buell Neidlinger. All About Jazz reviewer Clifford Allen wrote that the group "cut some of the most powerful music in the free jazz underground". In November 1962, Tchicai moved from his home country of Denmark to New York City at the suggestion of Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon, whom he had met at the Helsinki Jazz Festival earlier that year. Upon arriving in New York, Tchicai began playing with Dixon's group, which included Shepp and Roswell Rudd among others, and also sat in with Don Cherry and various other musicians. By the summer of 1963, Tchicai, Shepp, and Cherry had formed the New York Contemporary Five with bass ...

Lee Morgan
Edward Lee Morgan (July 10, 1938 – February 19, 1972) was an American jazz trumpeter and composer. One of the key hard bop musicians of the 1960s, Morgan came to prominence in his late teens, recording on John Coltrane's '' Blue Train'' (1957) and with the band of drummer Art Blakey before launching a solo career. Morgan stayed with Blakey until 1961 and started to record as leader in the late '50s. His song "The Sidewinder", on the album of the same name, became a surprise crossover hit on the pop and R&B charts in 1964, while Morgan's subsequent recordings found him touching on other styles of music such as post-bop and avant-garde jazz as his artistry matured. Soon after ''The Sidewinder'' was released, Morgan rejoined Blakey for a short period. After leaving Blakey for the final time, Morgan continued to work prolifically as both a leader and a sideman with the likes of Hank Mobley and Wayne Shorter, becoming a cornerstone of the Blue Note label. Morgan died at the a ...

The Body & The Soul
''The Body & the Soul'' is an album by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard recorded in 1963 as his second and last release on the Impulse! label. It features performances by Hubbard with an orchestra and string section, and with a septet featuring Curtis Fuller, Eric Dolphy, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, Reggie Workman and Louis Hayes. Reception A reviewer for ''Negro Digest'' stated: "From the opening track to the last Hubbard establishes and maintains a mood of excellence that literally explodes out to the listener. His solos are pregnant with quality and melody, and his technique is flawless. Unquestionably, this is the best by Freddie Hubbard to date. As for the music itself, it is all mainstream. There is no attempt at far-out-ness. Each tune is easy discernible, being buoyant for the most part with beauty and form". Michael G. Nastos of AllMusic added: "The manner in which this recording is programmed is thoughtful in that it lends to the diversity of the project, but is seamles ...

Doin' The Thang!
''Doin' the Thang!'' is the debut album by jazz pianist Ronnie Mathews featuring trumpeter Freddie Hubbard recorded for the Prestige label in 1963. Reception Alex Henderson of AllMusic said "the LP's focus is modal post-bop and non-soul-jazz hard bop. But even though the material isn't soul-jazz, Mathews' quintet is certainly soulful... Hubbard, who was only 25 when ''Doin' the Thang'' was recorded, brings a lot to the session – not only fire, guts, and passion, but also a big, highly appealing tone".Henderson, AAllMusic listingaccessed May 22, 2013.Ronnie Mathews Leader Entry
