1963 National Soccer League Season
The 1963 National Soccer League season was the fortieth season under the National Soccer League (NSL) name. The season began in late April and concluded in late October with Toronto Ukrainia defeating Toronto Hakoah for the O’Keefe Trophy (NSL Championship). The regular-season title was won by Italian Virtus by finishing first throughout the regular season. Overview The creation of the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League (ECPSL) in 1961 directly affected the National Soccer League (NSL) financially. The competition including the defection of the top NSL clubs to the ECPSL caused a major decrease in their match attendance throughout the early 1960s. Their drop-in the gate earnings at Stanley Park Stadium contributed to their failure in fully paying their tax and loan payments. Toronto Ukrainians (Sports Association Toronto Ukrainians, uk, СТ (Спортове Товариство) «Україна» (Торонто), translit=ST (Sportove Tovarystvo) "Ukraina" (Toronto)) is a Canadian soccer team. The club was founded on June 30, 1948 by Ukrainians that had been settled in the Toronto after second world war. The team's colours are red and black, similar to those of the Flag of the UPA and yellow, similar to those of the Ukraine national football team. Jim Lefkos
Demetrios "Jim" Lefkos is a retired Cypriot football (soccer) forward. He played professionally in the North American Soccer League and American Soccer League, where he led the league in scoring in 1969. Player A native of Cyprus, Lefkos attended the University of Toronto where he played on the school's soccer team from 1964 to 1969. Lefkos led the team in scoring for three consecutive seasons during which the Varsity Blues won three OQAA championships. He was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1999. Bruno Gerzeli (October 3, 1925 – November 8, 1982) was an Italian professional football player. Career Born in Monfalcone, Gerzeli, a winger, inside forward and centre-forward, started his career in the Serie C side C.R.D.A. Monfalcone, which was the team of his hometown Monfalcone. After World War II, Gerzeli played the 1945-46 Serie C season for Monfalconese (which was the new name of C.R.D.A. Monfalcone); he was then signed by Venezia, a team which was competing in the Serie A. Gerzeli only played one match during the 1946–47 Serie A season, on July 6, 1947, against Triestina. Bill Boytchuk
William Boytchuk (April 27, 1922 – January 22, 1998) was a longtime city councillor in Toronto, Ontario. He was born near Sniatyn, Poland and after spending several years in Germany immigrated to Canada in 1948. Working as a pharmacist he became active in the local Ukrainian committee. Boytchuk was elected to city council in the 1969 election representing the westernmost part of the Old City of Toronto covering Swansea and Bloor West Village. He was considered one of the council's "Old Guard" of conservative, generally pro-development councillors but became more moderate over his time in office. During the Cold War he was also notable for his strong anti-Soviet policies. He played a central role in having a monument to the Katyn Massacre erected in his ward. In sports leagues, promotion and relegation is a process where teams are transferred between multiple divisions based on their performance for the completed season. Leagues that use promotion and relegation systems are often called open leagues. The regular-season title was clinched by FC Olympia-Harmonie Toronto. Overview There was a major reshuffle in the league's membership due to competition from the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League (ECPSL). Two of the National Soccer League's (NSL) major clubs Polish White Eagles and Toronto Roma were accepted into the ECPSL. The league also lost its final representative from Quebec with the departure of Montreal Concordia.
