Aston is an area of inner Birmingham, England. Located immediately to the north-east of Central Birmingham, Aston constitutes a ward within the metropolitan authority. It is approximately 1.5 miles from Birmingham City Centre. History Aston was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as "Estone", having a mill, a priest and therefore probably a church, woodland and ploughland. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in medieval times to replace an earlier church. The body of the church was rebuilt by J. A. Chatwin during the period 1879 to 1890; the 15th century tower and spire, which was partly rebuilt in 1776, being the only survivors of the medieval building. George Graham
George Graham (born 30 November 1944), nicknamed "Stroller", is a Scottish former football player and manager. In his successful playing career, he made 455 appearances in England's Football League as a midfielder or forward for Aston Villa, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Portsmouth and Crystal Palace. Approximately half of his total appearances were for Arsenal, and he was part of the side that won the Football League Championship and FA Cup "double" in 1971. Graham also made 17 appearances for California Surf in the NASL in 1978. He then moved to the coaching staff at Crystal Palace, before joining former Palace manager Terry Venables as a coach at Queens Park Rangers. As a manager, he won numerous honours with Arsenal between 1987 and 1995, including two league titles (in 1989 and 1991), the 1993 FA Cup, two Football League Cups (in 1987 and 1993), as well as the 1994 European Cup Winners' Cup and also managed Millwall, Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur. Cammie Fraser
John Cameron Fraser (born 24 May 1941) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as a full back. He played 80 games for Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Football League and a further 72 for Aston Villa and Birmingham City in the English Football League. Playing career Fraser, born in Blackford, Perth and Kinross, began his football career as a youngster with Gairdoch United before joining Dunfermline Athletic in 1958 at the age of 17. Under Jock Stein's management at Dunfermline, he was a Scottish Cup-winner in 1961, defeating Celtic 2–0 in the replay after the original tie had finished goalless. Fraser, then 19, was the youngest player in the squad. This victory meant that Dunfermline qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup. Fraser played in the club's run to the quarter-final, in which they lost to Újpesti Dózsa 5–3 on aggregate, though he missed the first leg of the quarter-final due to influenza apparently brought on by a vaccination. ... Phil Woosnam
Phillip Abraham Woosnam (22 December 1932 – 19 July 2013) was a Welsh association football inside-right and manager. A native of Caersws, Powys, Wales, Woosnam played for five clubs in England and one in the United States. He played international football for Wales. He was described as a "gifted inside-forward with a pronounced football intelligence". He was Commissioner of the North American Soccer League from 1969 to 1982, overseeing the league's expansion and boom years. He was inducted into the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1997. Playing career Woosnam played football with Montgomeryshire Schoolboys and gained youth international honours with Wales, and gained eight amateur caps, the first against England in 1951. Lew Chatterley
Lawson Colin Chatterley (born 15 February 1945) is an English former professional football player and coach. He represented England at Youth level. Playing career Chatterley was born in Birmingham and began his career as an apprentice at Aston Villa, turning professional in February 1962, with his league debut coming the following season. He remained at Villa Park for over 9 years, making 153 league appearances and scoring 26 goals. During his stay at Villa Park, Aston Villa were relegated from Division 1 in 1967 and again from Division 2 in 1970. In March 1971 he joined Doncaster Rovers on loan, where he first met Lawrie McMenemy, who was to have a considerable influence on his later career. With his time at Villa at an end, Chatterley was sold to Northampton Town in September 1971 for £8,000. The 1962–63 season was the 83rd season of competitive football in England. Overview Everton won the League Championship, their first post-war title. Manchester United won the FA Cup, their first major trophy since the Munich Air Disaster in 1958. Birmingham City won the League Cup. Tottenham Hotspur won the European Cup Winners' Cup, thereby becoming the first English side to win a European cup competition. The 1961 Football League Cup Final was the inaugural League Cup final. It was contested by Rotherham United and Aston Villa over two legs. Aston Villa won 3–2 on aggregate.
