The 1962 Tampa Spartans football team represented the University of Tampa in the 1962 NCAA College Division football season. It was the Spartans' 26th season. The team was led by head coach Fred Pancoast, in his first year, and played their home games at Phillips Field in Tampa, Florida. Fred Pancoast
Fred Pancoast (born c. 1932) is a human resources executive and former American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Tampa (1962–1963), Memphis State University, now the University of Memphis, (1972–1974), and Vanderbilt University (1975–1978), compiling a career college football record of 41–51–4. Pancoast was born in Pensacola, Florida and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1949. He played football at the University of Tampa and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1967. After graduating from college, he served in the United States Marine Corps and later became an educator. Pancoast also coached at Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Florida. From 1962 to 1963, Pancoast served as the head football coach at Tampa. McNaspy Stadium
McNaspy Stadium was a 4,500-seat stadium built on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (then called Southwestern Louisiana Institute) built in 1940, and remained the home for the school's football team until 1971. The stadium was located to the southwest of Earl K. Long Gymnasium, which had been built the previous year, and consisted of a large home grandstand on the north side and bleachers on the south, with a cinder track surrounded by hedges in the end zones. The grandstand had arches along its top (to reflect the arches in the "arcade" along the Quad, built at roughly the same time), and also contained men's dorm space, weight rooms, locker rooms, etc. The field was oriented in a northeast–southwest direction, mirroring the street grid of the rest of the campus. Phillips Field (Florida)
Phillips Field was a medium-sized stadium (maximum capacity approximately 20,000) located on the west bank of the Hillsborough River across from downtown Tampa, immediately adjacent to the University of Tampa. It opened on October 4, 1937, and served as the home for the University of Tampa's football team from 1937 to 1967. The facility was named for local businessman I. W. Phillips, who donated the land to the school so that the Spartans would not have to share nearby Plant Field, which was often unavailable due to its use for many different sports and community events. Besides "Tampa U" home games, Phillips Field hosted many other sporting events. It was the home football field for Middleton High School and Blake High School, two segregated schools that ended the season with a rivalry game at the field.
