1962 Humboldt State Lumberjacks Football Team
The 1962 Humboldt State Lumberjacks football team represented Humboldt State College during the 1962 NCAA College Division football season. Humboldt State competed in the Far Western Conference (FWC).The Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC) was known as the Far Western Conference (FWC) from its founding in 1925 to 1982. The 1962 Lumberjacks were led by head coach Phil Sarboe in his twelfth year at the helm. They played home games at the Redwood Bowl in Arcata, California. Humboldt State finished with a record of seven wins and two losses (7–2, 3–2 FWC). The Lumberjacks outscored their opponents 217–56 for the season. Philip John Sarboe (August 22, 1911 – November 19, 1985) was an American football player and coach. He played college football at the State College of Washington—now Washington State University—and professionally in National Football League (NFL) with the Boston Redskins, Chicago Cardinals, and Brooklyn Dodgers. Sarboe served as the head football coach at Central Washington College of Education—now Central Washington University—from 1941 to 1942, Washington State from 1945 to 1949, Humboldt State College—now Humboldt State University—from 1951 to 1965, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1966, compiling a career college football record of . Wendell Hayes
Wendell Hayes (August 5, 1940 - December 28, 2019) was a former American football running back. Wendell played college football at Humboldt State University. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos and the AFL's Kansas City Chiefs, which included the team that defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth and final AFL-NFL World Championship Game. Early years Hayes attended McClymonds High School where he developed into an exceptional multi-sport athlete. He received All-Oakland Athletic League honors in football, basketball and track.
