1961–62 FAI Cup
The FAI Cup 1961–62 was the 41st edition of Ireland's premier cup competition, The Football Association of Ireland Challenge Cup or FAI Cup. The tournament began on 18 February 1962 and concluded on 28 April with the final held at Dalymount Park, Dublin. An official attendance of 32,000 people watched Shamrock Rovers win their 14th FAI Cup title by defeating local rivals and League Champions Shelbourne 4–1. Eric Barber (Irish Footballer)
Eric Barber (18 January 1942 – 20 August 2014) was an Irish professional footballer. He spent most of his career playing for Shelbourne in the League of Ireland with whom he had three spells from 1958 to 1966, 1971–75 and 1978–80, managing them during the 1979–80 season. Player Professional During his time with Shels, Barber scored a club record 126 league goals. He was part of Shels FAI Youth Cup-winning side in 1959 and went on to win the League of Ireland championship in 1962, and the FAI Cup in 1960 and 1963, beating Cork Hibernians 2–0 on both occasions. Barber scored in every round including the final in the 1960 cup win and in the 1962 cup final defeat to Shamrock Rovers. His goal in the 1960 final was a lob from almost forty yards. In March 1966, Barber signed for Birmingham City, but never became a regular. Tolka Park
Tolka Park () is an Ireland, Irish association football ground located in the Northside Dublin, north Dublin suburb of Drumcondra, Dublin, Drumcondra, on the northern banks of the River Tolka. It is currently the home ground of League of Ireland club Shelbourne F.C., Shelbourne men's and Shelbourne F.C. (women), women's senior sides. Billy Dixon (footballer, Born 1941)
Billy Dixon (born 12 February 1941) is an Irish former footballer. He began his career at Home Farm F.C. and after playing for Waterford United F.C. he signed for Drumcondra where he made his debut in a 5-5 draw with Shamrock Rovers in 1963. He scored in Inter-Cities Fairs Cup wins over Danish side B 1909 of Odense (twice) and Bayern Munich. He joined Shamrock Rovers F.C. in June 1966 and scored on his debut. He earned one League of Ireland XI while at Milltown and 12 in total and scored 4 goals in 10 appearances in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Dixon scored the winner in his only FAI Cup final in 1967. He scored twice while playing for Rovers when they represented Boston as Boston Rovers in the summer of 1967 United Soccer Association. He was placed on the transfer list in July 1971 after five years at Glenmalure Park. Dixon signed for Drogheda United F.C. soon after with Joe Haverty and scored on his debut against Rovers. Frank O'Neill (footballer, Born 1940)
Frank O'Neill (born 13 April 1940) is an Irish former footballer who spent most of his career at Shamrock Rovers. As an international he also played for the Republic of Ireland. Playing career Early years O'Neill joined Stella Maris at the age of twelve before moving onto Home Farm. He also played for an FAI Youth Selection against a Liverpool County FA XI at Goodison Park, and in 1958 he played against the youth teams of some of the leading European clubs in a tournament in Germany. Arsenal O'Neill signed for Arsenal as an eighteen-year-old, initially as an amateur but subsequently turned professional in April 1959. He spent the next two seasons playing for Arsenal Reserves, making just 2 appearances in the English League. On both occasions, during the 1960–61 season, he deputised for the injured Danny Clapton. Paddy Ambrose
Patrick Ambrose (17 October 1928 – 22 February 2002) was an Irish professional football player and coach. Ambrose was from Dublin, Ireland. Signed by Jimmy Dunne from junior side Clontarf, he was associated with Shamrock Rovers from 1948 to 1973, firstly as a player and then as a coach. He made his debut against Transport in Bray on 28 August 1949 in a Dublin City Cup game. He was one of the club's best ever strikers. During his career at Rovers he scored 109 League goals which is a club record. He was the leading scorer at the club in 1953–54, 1954–55, 1955–56 (20 goals) and 1960–61. When Rovers won the title in 1953–54, their first title for fifteen years, Ambrose scored 13 goals. He won a League medal with Shamrock Rovers four times, in 1953–54, 1956–57, 1958–59 and 1963–64. Eddie Bailham
Eddie Bailham (8 May 1941 – 18 December 2016) was an Irish footballer. Career After an apprenticeship at Manchester United the same time as Johnny Giles he returned home to play for Home Farm In August 1959 he signed for Cork Hibernians. He joined Shamrock Rovers in 1960 and as a striker was top scorer in the League of Ireland on two occasions, 1961–62 and 1963–64. On 20 August 1962 Bailham scored his only headed goal for the Hoops in a 5–5 draw against Drumcondra In February 1963 he scored four times as Rovers hammered Bohemians 7–1 at Glenmalure Park. In August 1963 he scored a hat trick of penalties in a 4–1 win over Limerick F.C. Played 5 times in European competition for the Milltown club. Scored 49 league and 12 FAI Cup goals in the Hoops. Tommy Hamilton
Tommy Hamilton (born 1935) is an Irish former footballer who played as a forward. He was educated at Synge Street CBS in Dublin. His first club was Manchester United whom he joined in 1953 where he began playing as an inside forward for the third team and reserves. Hamilton had played for Johnville, where he was trained and scouted by Jem Kennedy who sent him to Manchester United. However, Hamilton was not prepared for being conscripted so he came home to sign for Shamrock Rovers in November 1955 and made his debut against Waterford at Kilcohan Park on 6 November in a League of Ireland Shield match. The following season he was the League's top scorer. Hamilton scored twice for Rovers in the European Champion Clubs' Cup. After scoring at OGC Nice he was ruled out of the home leg due to tonsillitis. He played three times in Europe for the Hoops. Ben Hannigan
Ben Hannigan (3 September 1943 – 4 February 2021) was an Irish footballer who played as an inside forward. He spent most of his career playing for Shelbourne in the League of Ireland. Career Hannigan had three different spells with Shelbourne as a player from 1961 to 1966, 1972–74, and finally in the 1980–81 season. His first spell was the most successful as Shels won the league championship in 1962 after defeating Cork Celtic in a play-off and then defeating Cork Hibernians in the following year's FAI Cup final. In December 1965 he signed for Wrexham but was soon back home with Dundalk where he won the League in 1967. He scored over 50 goals for the Oriel Park side. Hannigan then signed for Shamrock Rovers in April 1969 and made his debut on 6 April. He won the FAI Cup in his first season and represented Rovers twice in European competition against Schalke 04.
