The 1961 Victorian Trophy was an International motor race staged at the Ballarat Air Strip circuit in Victoria, Australia on 12 February 1961.Official Programme, International Motor Race Meeting, Ballarat Air Strip, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th February 1961 Open to Formula Libre cars, it was contested over 33 laps, a distance of approximately 100 miles (161 km). The race meeting was organised by the Light Car Club of Australia. Ballarat Air Strip Circuit
Ballarat Airport (known officially as the Ballarat Aerodrome) is located west of Ballarat in the outer suburb of Mitchell Park, Victoria, Australia. History Pilot training was first offered on the Ballarat Common in 1914–15. In 1934, the airport was formalised with the construction of a tin hangar. No. 1 Wireless Air Gunners School (1 WAGS) In 1940, the site was resumed by the Commonwealth of Australia, and a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) airfield known as Empire Air Training Scheme No 1 Wireless Air Gunners School was established (EATS 1 WAGS) at the Ballarat Showgrounds on 22 April 1940. The hangar already on the site was relocated to the Commonwealth Flax Mill, and four Bellman hangars and numerous "P" (personnel) Huts were erected. Cooper T51
The Cooper T51 was a Formula One and Formula Two racing car designed by Owen Maddock and built by the Cooper Car Company for the 1959 Formula One season. The T51 earned a significant place in motor racing history when Jack Brabham drove the car to become the first driver to win the World Championship of Drivers with an engine mounted behind them, in 1959. The T51 was raced in several configurations by various entrants until 1963 and in all no less than 38 drivers were entered to drive T51s in Grand Prix races. Bill Patterson (racing Driver)
Gerald William Riggall Patterson (30 August 1923 – 10 January 2010) was an Australian motor racing driver, race team owner and businessman. Patterson, son of Wimbledon champion Gerald Patterson, attended his father's school, Scotch College, Melbourne, from 1931 to 1934, and Geelong Grammar School from 1935 to 1941. He was one of a brace of new drivers that emerged after World War II, first appearing in the Australian Grand Prix in 1948 driving a stripped down MG TC. After improving the MG as far as he was able, he moved to a JAP powered Cooper Mk.V in 1953. Patterson used this to win his first national title, the 1954 Australian Hillclimb Championship. In the scorching heat of a Western Australian summer in 1957, Patterson stepped into Lex Davison's Ferrari 625 F1 as a relief driver, working together to defeat Stan Jones to win the 1957 Australian Grand Prix. The Lotus 18 was a race car designed by Colin Chapman for use by Lotus in Formula Junior, Formula Two, and Formula One. Overview Lotus 18 was the first mid-engined car built by Lotus and was a marked improvement over Chapman's early and only moderately successful front-engined formula cars, the 12 and 16. Lieutenant Robert McGregor Innes Ireland (12 June 1930 – 22 October 1993), was a British military officer, engineer, and motor racing driver, with 1 Championship and 8 non-Championship Formula 1 race victories, and several sports car wins including one Tourist Trophy. Ireland was a larger-than-life character who, according to a rival team boss, "lived without sense, without an analyst, and provoked astonishment and affection from everyone." The Aston Martin DBR4/250, commonly referred to simply as the DBR4, is a Formula One racing car, designed by Ted Cutting for the sports car manufacturer Aston Martin. Following notable successes in sports car racing during the mid- to late-1950s — culminating in winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race and the World Sportscar Championship title in — the DBR4 was intended to repeat this success in the highest tier of open-wheel racing. Lex Davison
Alexander Nicholas Davison (12 February 1923 – 20 February 1965) was a racing driver who won the Australian Grand Prix four times between 1954 Australian Grand Prix, 1954 and 1961 Australian Grand Prix, 1961 and won the Australian Drivers' Championship in 1957. He drove Hersham and Walton Motors, HWM-Jaguar, Ferrari, Aston Martin and Cooper Car Company, Cooper-Climax grand prix cars. Cooper T45
The Cooper T45 was an open-wheel formula racing car, developed and built by the Cooper Car Company in 1958, and designed by Owen Maddock. It competed in Formula 2 racing as well as in Formula One racing, where it won one World Championship Grand Prix, the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix, being driven by Maurice Trintignant. John Roxburgh (racing Driver)
John Roxburgh, (25 April 1932 – 2 August 1993) was an Australian racing driver, and motor sports administrator. Roxburgh's career was highlighted by taking victory in the original 1960 Armstrong 500 (known later as the Bathurst 1000), co-driving a Vauxhall Cresta with Frank Coad. Roxburgh continued to race touring cars well into the 1970s, most notably racing for the factory supported Nissan Motors, Datsun Racing Team. Alec Mildren (1915–1998) was active in Australian motor racing as a driver from 1938 to 1961, and subsequently as the owner of Alec Mildren Racing.
