John F. Chironna (July 4, 1928 – October 15, 2010) was an American football and baseball coach. He served as the head coach of the Rhode Island Rams football team in 1961 and 1962, compiling a record of 4–11–3. Rhode Island–UConn Football Rivalry
The college football rivalry between the University of Connecticut and the University of Rhode Island dates back to the 1890s and was born largely out of proximity, with the schools being less than 60 miles apart. The schools competed in all sports for decades as members of the Yankee Conference. Even though UConn became a charter member of the Big East in 1979, the schools continued to compete in football at the I-AA level as members of the Atlantic 10. The yearly games ended after UConn left the A-10 to move to I-A football in 2000. In 94 meetings since 1897, UConn leads the series 52–34–8. The 1961 Hofstra Flying Dutchmen football team was an American football team that represented Hofstra College during the 1961 NCAA College Division football season. Hofstra had one of the better records in the Middle Atlantic Conference, College–Northern Division, but was ineligible for the championship. In their 12th year under head coach Howard "Howdy" Myers Jr., the Flying Dutchmen compiled a 7–2 record, and outscored opponents 168 to 41. Pete Carew, Dick Cooney and Tim Gannon were the team captains. Hofstra was one of three teams in the MAC Northern Division that finished the year undefeated in conference play.
