1961 NCAA Skiing Championships
The 1961 NCAA Skiing Championships were contested at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl in Hancock, Vermont at the eighth annual NCAA-sanctioned ski tournament to determine the individual and team national champions of men's collegiate alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and ski jumping in the United States. Denver, coached by Willy Schaeffler, captured their fifth national championship, the first since 1957, edging out host Middlebury in the team standings. This was the start of Denver's seven straight titles from 1961 through 1967. Venue This year's championships were held March 9–11 in Vermont at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl in Hancock. Middlebury College, located in nearby Middlebury, served as hosts. The United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) is the sports federation for college sports, collegiate skiing and snowboarding in the United States. With over 180 member colleges, the USCSA fields some 5,000 men and women, alpine, Nordic, freeski and snowboard athletes in over 200 competitive events annually. The 1957 NCAA Skiing Championships were contested at Snow Basin at Mount Ogden, Utah, at the fourth annual NCAA-sanctioned ski tournament to determine the individual and team national champions of men's collegiate alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and ski jumping in the United States. Denver claimed its fourth national championship in as many years, all under coach Willy Schaeffler, topping in-state rivals Colorado in the team standings. The sole repeat individual champion was Dartmouth's Chiharu Igaya in the slalom, his third consecutive and sixth individual NCAA title. He was the silver medalist in slalom at the 1956 Winter Olympics. Washington Huskies Ski Team
The Washington Huskies are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the University of Washington, located in Seattle. The school competes at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level as a member of the Pac-12 Conference. Washington students, sports teams, and alumni are called Huskies. The husky was selected as the school mascot by the Associated Students of UW in 1922. It replaced the "Sun Dodger," an abstract reference to the local weather that was quickly dropped in favor of something more tangible. The costumed "Harry the Husky" performs at sporting and special events, and a live Alaskan Malamute, currently named Dubs II, traditionally leads the football team onto the field at the start of games. The school colors of purple and gold were adopted in 1892 by student vote. Idaho Vandals Ski Team
The Idaho Vandals are the intercollegiate athletic teams representing the University of Idaho, located in Moscow. The Vandals compete at the NCAA Division I level as a member of the Big Sky Conference. The football team was an independent for the 2013 season due to a major wave of departures from the Western Athletic Conference that left just two football-playing schools. In July 2014, Idaho returned its football team to the Sun Belt Conference and the other sports rejoined the Big Sky Conference. The university's official colors are silver and gold, honoring the state's mining tradition. Because these metallic colors in tandem are not visually complementary for athletic uniforms, black and gold are the prevalent colors for the athletic teams, with an occasional use of silver, similar to Colorado, whose official colors are also silver and gold. Maine Black Bears Ski Team
The Maine Black Bears are the athletic teams that represent the University of Maine. A member of the America East Conference, the University of Maine sponsors teams in eight men's and nine women's NCAA sanctioned sports. The men's and women's ice hockey teams are members of Hockey East, and the football team is an associate member of the Colonial Athletic Association. Teams Ice hockey The men's ice hockey program was introduced in 1977. The team has been successful and have won the Hockey East title five times, appeared in eleven Frozen Fours, and won 2 National Championships.
