1961 NAIA World Series
The 1961 NAIA World Series was the fifth annual tournament hosted by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics to determine the national champion of baseball among its member colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The tournament was played at Soos Park in Sioux City, Iowa. East Carolina (22-4) defeated Sacramento State (22-14) in the championship series, 13–7, to win the Pirates' first NAIA World Series. East Carolina pitcher Larry Crayton was named tournament MVP. Double Elimination
A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost ''two'' games or matches. It stands in contrast to a single-elimination tournament, in which only ''one'' defeat results in elimination. One method of arranging a double-elimination tournament is to break the competitors into two sets of brackets, the ''winners' bracket'' and ''losers' bracket'' (''W'' and ''L'' brackets for short; also referred to as ''championship bracket'' and ''elimination bracket'', ''upper bracket'' and ''lower bracket'', or ''main bracket'' and ''repechage'') after the first round. The Winona State Warriors are the athletic teams of Winona State University, located in Winona, Minnesota. They compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II for all sports except for women's gymnastics, which competes in the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association. Slippery Rock University, formally Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania (The Rock or SRU), is a public university in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. The Grambling State Tigers baseball team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana, U.S. The team is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. The Sam Houston State Bearkats baseball team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, United States. Defiance Yellow Jackets
Defiance College is a private college located in Defiance, Ohio and affiliated with the United Church of Christ. The campus includes eighteen buildings and access to the Thoreau Wildlife Sanctuary. History The college began as Defiance Female Seminary in 1850 and was opened by the Christian Connection (now part of the UCC, see above) to provide schooling for young women. William Curtis Holgate, a local businessman, donated most of the campus. The Sacramento State Hornets baseball team represents California State University, Sacramento, which is located in Sacramento, California. The Hornets are an NCAA Division I college baseball program that competes in the Western Athletic Conference. They began competing in Division I in 1990 and re-joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2006. They were a part of the Big West Conference from 1997 to 2002.
