1961 Intercontinental Cup
The 1961 Intercontinental Cup was a football match between Uruguayan club Peñarol, winners of the 1961 Copa Libertadores, and Portuguese club Benfica, winners of the 1960–61 European Cup. Peñarol won the Intercontinental Cup for the first time. A play-off was needed due to the rules at the time that awarded 2 points for each victory and both teams having won one game each. Intercontinental Cup (football)
The European/South American Cup, more commonly known as the Intercontinental Cup and from 1980 to 2004 as the Toyota European/South American Cup (abbreviated as Toyota Cup) for sponsorship reasons, was an international association football, football competition endorsed by UEFA (Europe) and CONMEBOL (South America), contested between representative clubs from these confederations (representatives of most developed continents in the football world), usually the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the South American Copa Libertadores. It ran from 1960 to 2004, when it was succeeded by the FIFA Club World Cup, FIFA Club World Championship, although they both ran concurrently in 2000. Juan Joya
Juan Joya Cordero (February 25, 1934 РMarch 29, 2007) was a Peruvian association football player, recognized as one of Peru's most important strikers. He was a historic forward of the Club Atl̩tico Pe̱arol of Uruguay in the 1960s, one of the best South American teams of the twentieth century. Fernando Cruz (footballer)
Fernando da Conceição Cruz (born 12 August 1940) is a Portuguese former professional footballer who played as a left-back. Club career Born in Lisbon, Cruz was already first choice with Benfica at the age of 20, going on to win eight Primeira Liga championships with the club as well as four Portuguese Cups. He played in all five European Cup finals the side reached in the 60s, winning the 1961 and 1962 editions and appearing in 346 official games during his 11-year stint (one goal). Cruz ended his professional career in June 1971, after one year with newly-formed Paris Saint-Germain. Humberto Fernandes
Humberto da Silva Fernandes (5 October 1938 – 8 February 2009) was a former Portuguese footballer who played mainly as a centre-back. Over the course of 12 seasons, Fernandes amassed Primeira Liga totals of 58 games, all at Benfica, winning 11 major titles. Ângelo Gaspar Martins (19 April 1930 – 11 October 2020), simply known as Ângelo, was a Portuguese footballer who played as a defender for Benfica and the Portugal national team. Club career Born in Porto on 19 April 1930, Ângelo turned down an opportunity to play football for FC Porto because he was a supporter of rivals Benfica, from Lisbon, and hometown club Salgueiros. Alberto da Costa Pereira (22 December 1929 – 25 October 1990) was a Portuguese footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Club career Born in Nacala, Portuguese Mozambique from a colonial White African family, Costa Pereira was noticed by S.L. Benfica while playing with Clube Ferroviário de Lourenço Marques. He signed with the Portuguese in 1954 and immediately became first-choice, playing 26 games in his first season and winning the first of his eight national championships. Roberto Scarone
Roberto Scarone Rivera (16 July 1917 – 25 April 1994) was a Uruguayan football player and manager. He is mainly known for his successful managing spell at the helm of the Uruguayan powerhouse Peñarol in the early 1960s. Career Scarone started playing professionally at his hometown club Peñarol in the 1930s. In 1939, at the age of 22, he moved to Gimnasia La Plata in Argentina where he spent four seasons. Between 1943 and 1947 he had spells with Mexican sides América and Atlante before coming back to Gimnasia in 1948. Luis Alberto Cubilla Almeida (28 March 1940 – 3 March 2013) was a Uruguayan football player and coach. He had a successful playing career winning 16 major titles. He then went on to become one of the most successful managers in South American football with 17 major titles. Néstor Goncálvez Martinicorena (27 April 1936 – 29 December 2016) was a Uruguayan footballer who played as a midfielder for Uruguay in the 1962 and 1966 FIFA World Cups. He mainly played for C.A. WÃlliam Ruben MartÃnez Carreras (January 13, 1928 – December 28, 1997) was a Uruguayan footballer. He played 54 times for the Uruguay national football team between 1950 and 1965. MartÃnez came through the youth team of local side Sportivo Alba de Victoria and signed on as a youth player for Nacional in 1962.
