John Van Alphen
Jan "John" van Alphen (17 June 1914 – 19 December 1961) was a Belgian footballer, born in Antwerp, Belgium. He played as a midfielder for Beerschot VAC. With the anversois, he twice won the Belgian Championship, in 1938 and 1939. Lieutenant-general BEM Victor Jean Clement, ''Baron'' van Strydonck de Burkel (16 July 1876, Antwerp – 4 August 1961, Etterbeek) was a general of the Belgian Army and the primary architect of the formation of the Free Belgian Forces after Belgium's official surrender on May 28, 1940 in World War II. Military career First World War and Interwar In 1918, as an officer in the 1st Regiment of Guides, Victor van Strydonck commanded the last cavalry charge in western Europe, the successful Charge of Burkel. For his role in the charge, van Strydonck was made a baron and given the title "de Burkel" in 1937 after the location of the battle. A cavalry officer, van Strydonck de Burkel commanded the Cavalry School (1920–1923) and the 1st Cavalry Division (1928–1933), served as the inspector-general of the Belgian Gendarmerie (1933–1939), and was the commander of the Cavalry Corps (1933–1939) prior to World War II. Julius Raes
Julius (Jules) Raes (1884–1961), known in religion as Hildebrand and also under the pen name H. Cappaert, was a Belgian Capuchin historian and archivist. Life Raes was born in Hooglede on 3 June 1884, the youngest son of Frans Raes and Marie-Louise Vancoilliue.J.P. He attended the Capuchin-run Serafijns College in Bruges and on 28 September 1901 joined the Capuchin Order in Enghien, taking the religious name Hildebrand. He was ordained to the priesthood in Enghien on 13 October 1907 and was sent to study at the Catholic University of Leuven, where he graduated Bachelor of Theology in 1909. Frans Van Cauwelaert (10 January 1880 – 17 May 1961), was a Belgian Roman Catholic politician and lawyer. Van Cauwelaert was born at Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Lombeek. He was a member of the Flemish movement, Professor of psychology at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Leuven), mayor of Antwerp (1921–1932), and co-founder of the daily journal ''De Standaard''. He fought for using Dutch at the University of Ghent, together with the Socialist Camille Huysmans and the liberal Louis Franck. In 1911 they proposed a bill to the Belgian parliament, which originated from Lodewijk De Raet for the usage of Dutch at the University of Ghent instead of French. He has been the mayor of Schaerbeek since 2001 and is currently vice-president of the Democratic Front of Francophones, Front Démocratique des Francophones (FDF).
