1960 NAIA World Series
The 1960 NAIA World Series was the fourth annual tournament hosted by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics to determine the national champion of baseball among its member colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The tournament was played at Soos Park in Sioux City, Iowa. Whitworth (20-8) defeated Georgia Southern (21-11) in the championship series, 4–0, to win the Pirates' first NAIA World Series. Washburn pitcher, and future MLB player and two-time World Series champion with the St. Louis Cardinals, Ray Washburn was named tournament MVP. A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost ''two'' games or matches. It stands in contrast to a single-elimination tournament, in which only ''one'' defeat results in elimination. The Southern Jaguars baseball team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States. The team is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. 1960 NCAA University Division Baseball Tournament
The 1960 NCAA University Division baseball tournament was played at the end of the 1960 NCAA University Division baseball season to determine the national champion of college baseball. The tournament concluded with eight teams competing in the College World Series, a double-elimination tournament in its fourteenth year. Eight regional districts sent representatives to the College World Series with preliminary rounds within each district serving to determine each representative. These events would later become known as regionals. Each district had its own format for selecting teams, resulting in 25 teams participating in the tournament at the conclusion of their regular season, and in some cases, after a conference tournament. Morningside Mustangs
Morningside University is a private university affiliated with the United Methodist Church and located in Sioux City, Iowa. Founded in 1894 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, Morningside University has 21 buildings on a campus in Sioux City (area population 143,157 in 2008.). The Southern Illinois Salukis baseball team represents Southern Illinois University in NCAA Division I college baseball. They are part of the Missouri Valley Conference. Twenty-four Saluki Baseball alumni have gone on to the Major Leagues. History On June 20, 2019, Southern Illinois University Director of Athletics Jerry Kill announced Lance Rhodes as the program's new head coach. Rhodes is a Sikeston, Missouri, native, and joined the Saluki baseball program from the University of Missouri, where he had served as the head assistant and recruiting coordinator. The Georgia Southern Eagles baseball team is the intercollegiate baseball team representing Georgia Southern University. It began in 1933. The program competes in NCAA Division I. The team is led by head coach Rodney Hennon, who is in his 22nd year at Georgia Southern. The Eagles are part of the Sun Belt Conference. Team highlights The team went to the College World Series in 1973 and 1990 and has appeared in 13 NCAA regionals. The Eagles were the NAIA National Champions in 1962, sweeping Portland State.
