1960 Copa De Campeones Finals
The 1960 Copa de Campeones Finals was a football series between Peñarol and Olimpia on June 12 and June 19 of this very year. It was the final of the first staging of the Copa de Campeones de América (known in the modern era as the Copa Libertadores), which would go on to become the premier club competition in South American football and one of the most prestigious competition in the world. Seven teams entered the competition in its first season and, due to the odd number of teams, Olimpia reached the finals having won only one match and playing merely two. 1960 Copa Libertadores
The 1960 Copa de Campeones de América was the first season of the Copa CONMEBOL Libertadores, CONMEBOL's premier club tournament. Seven association's clubs entered the first competition, with three not sending a representative. The first match of the tournament was played between Uruguayan side Peñarol and Bolivian side Jorge Wilstermann on April 19 in Montevideo, Uruguay. During that game, Ausberto García of Jorge Wilstermann became the first player to move the ball in the tournament setting the motions for what is to become one of the most prestigious competitions in the world. Carlos Borges of Peñarol scored the first goal of the tournament, with teammate and legendary figure Alberto Spencer scoring the first hat-trick. Peñarol would go to become the first South American club champion after defeating the Olimpia in the finals. Carlos Borges
Carlos Ariel Borges (14 January 1932 – 5 February 2014) was a Uruguayan footballer who played for Uruguay national team. He is best known for scoring the first ever goal in the history of Copa Libertadores. He is also one of the three Uruguayan footballers ever to score a hat-trick in FIFA World Cup. He achieved this feat in 1954 FIFA World Cup against Scotland. Borges earned 35 caps and scored 10 goals for the national team from 1954 to 1959. He represented the nation in the 1954 FIFA World Cup, in which they finished fourth. Luis Alberto Cubilla Almeida (28 March 1940 – 3 March 2013) was a Uruguayan football player and coach. He had a successful playing career winning 16 major titles. He then went on to become one of the most successful managers in South American football with 17 major titles. Early career Also known as "El Negro", Cubilla was born in Paysandú and started his playing career in the youth team of Colón de Paysandú. Néstor Gonçalves
Néstor Goncálvez Martinicorena (27 April 1936 – 29 December 2016) was a Uruguayan footballer who played as a midfielder for Uruguay in the 1962 and 1966 FIFA World Cups. He mainly played for C.A. Peñarol and is considered to have been one of the best South American midfielders of the 1960s. Born in Cabellos, Artigas, Gonçalvez began his career playing football for Salto from 1953 to 1956. William Martínez (footballer)
Wílliam Ruben Martínez Carreras (January 13, 1928 – December 28, 1997) was a Uruguayan footballer. He played 54 times for the Uruguay national football team between 1950 and 1965. Martínez came through the youth team of local side Sportivo Alba de Victoria and signed on as a youth player for Nacional in 1962. After playing for Nacional at various youth levels and for the first team he joined Racing Club de Montevideo in 1947.
