1959–60 AHL Season
The 1959–60 AHL Season (sports), season was the List of AHL seasons, 24th season of the American Hockey League. Seven teams played 72 games each in the schedule. The Quebec Aces become the first Canada-based team in the league. The Springfield Indians finished first overall in the regular season, and won their first Calder Cup championship. American Hockey League
The American Hockey League (AHL) is a professional ice hockey league in North America that serves as the primary developmental league of the National Hockey League (NHL). The league comprises 32 teams, with 26 in the United States and 6 in Canada. As of the 2024–25 AHL season, all 32 NHL teams held affiliations with an AHL team. Historically, when an NHL team does not have an AHL affiliate, its players are assigned to AHL teams affiliated with other NHL franchises. The league offices are located in Springfield, Massachusetts, and its current president is Scott Howson. Bruce Cline
Allan Bruce Cline (November 14, 1931 – April 24, 2025) was a Canadian ice hockey right winger. He played 30 games in the National Hockey League for the New York Rangers during the 1956–57 season. The rest of his career lasted from 1952 to 1968 and was mainly spent in the minor league American Hockey League, where he won the Calder Cup, the league championship, four times. As an AHL rookie in 1955-56, Cline scored 57 points in leading the Providence Reds to a league championship. He won the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as AHL rookie of the year. After three seasons in Providence, Cline joined the Buffalo Bisons, reaching the AHL finals. Cline next moved to the Springfield Indians, where he won three straight titles (1960-62) and was a first team AHL All-Star in 1961 and second team in 1963. Stan Smrke
Stanko Smrke (September 2, 1928 — April 14, 1977) was a Yugoslavian-born Canadian ice hockey forward. He played 9 games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens during the 1956–57 and 1957–58 seasons. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1947 to 1967, was spent in the minor leagues. Career Smrke started his National Hockey League career with the Montreal Canadiens in 1956. He was the first Yugoslavian-born player ever to play in the NHL. Smrke played his entire NHL career (9 games) with the Habs. Over his career, he scored a total of three assists before being dropped by the team. His final season in the NHL was the 1957–58 season. Dick Gamble
Richard Frank Gamble (November 16, 1928 – March 22, 2018) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played in the National Hockey League for the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Black Hawks, and Toronto Maple Leafs between 1950 and 1967. His career, which lasted from 1949 to 1970, was mainly spent in the American Hockey League. Gamble won the Stanley Cup in 1953 with the Montreal Canadiens. He won the Calder Cup with the Rochester Americans in 1965, 1966, and 1968. During the 1967-1968 AHL Season, he led the league in scoring and won the Les Cunningham Award. Wilmott J. Marshall (December 1, 1930 – June 2, 2023) was a Canadian ice hockey forward. Marshall holds the record for most goals, points, assists, hat tricks, and games played in the American Hockey League (AHL), which he achieved over a 20-season career. Marshall also played with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League for four seasons between 1953 and 1958. Stanley Baluik (also spelled Baliuk; born October 5, 1935) is a former Canadian ice hockey centre and professional golfer. Floyd Smith (ice Hockey)
Floyd Robert Donald Smith (born May 16, 1935) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre and coach. Biography Smith grew up in Galt, Ontario, playing junior hockey with the Galt Black Hawks. He made his National Hockey League debut for the Boston Bruins, playing 3 games with the team in 1955, but he was mostly mired in the minors during the early portion of his career. He played 23 games with Boston over the next two seasons, while serving as a significant contributor on the Hershey Bears club. Smith then spent five years with the New York Rangers organization, reaching the NHL for a 29-game stint in 1961. During this period, he was a dominant force with the Springfield Indians, scoring 82 points in 71 games in 1960. Bill Sweeney (hockey)
William Sweeney (January 30, 1937 – March 21, 1991), was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played 4 games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers during the 1959–60 season.
