The 1959 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Melbourne Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 20 September 1959. Ian McLean (footballer)
Ian McLean (27 August 192923 March 1965) was an Australian rules football player in the Victorian Football League, (VFL). Family The son of Alexander Leonard McLean (1887–1956), and Elsie May McLean (1888–1961), née Robertson, Ian McLean was born at Bendigo, Victoria on 27 August 1929. He married Rita Joan Driver in 1955. Football Ian McLean played in Melbourne premiership teams in 1955, 1957 and 1959, and well as the runner-up side of 1954. Courageous, quick both over the ground and in terms of reflexes, and a smooth ball handler, McLean, who hailed from Bendigo, played a total of 146 VFL games and booted 29 goals for the Demons between 1951 and 1960. Peter Brenchley
Peter Brenchley (23 October 1936 – 23 April 1991) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1950s. Despite managing only 29 games of league football, Brenchley played in two premiership sides. In each of his three seasons he appeared in a Grand Final, winning flags in 1957 and 1959. Such was Melbourne's strength in this era that Brenchley finished on a losing team in only four games. After leaving Melbourne, Brenchley moved to South Australia and played with Norwood in the South Australian National Football League during 1960 and 1961. He then returned to Victoria and played with Waverley in the Victorian Football Association for five seasons, where he won a premiership in 1965. Don Williams (footballer, Born 1935)
Donald Edward Williams (3 November 1935 – 19 October 1995) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne during the 1950s and 1960s. Williams was a half-back flanker and five time premiership player with Melbourne, including their successive triumphs in 1955, 1956 and 1957. After being dropped to the bench in the 1959 grand final he decided to leave the club and spent the 1960 season with West Perth, who won the WAFL Grand Final in that year. He represented Western Australia in the Brisbane Carnival where Western Australia defeated Victoria for the first time. He returned to the Melbourne Football Club in 1964 and played in that year's four-point Grand Final win over Collingwood. Dick Fenton-Smith
Richard Edward Fenton-Smith (19 October 1931 – 11 April 2021) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1950s. Prior to starting with Melbourne Fenton-Smith played with the 1954 QANFL premiership Western Districts team. Recruited from Ormond Amateur Football Club, Fenton-Smith played in many positions in his brief career including the ruck and defence. Ian Jeffrey Ridley (15 February 1934 – 13 November 2008) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the VFL. Playing career Ridley was a rover who was handy around goals and a 5-time premiership player with Melbourne. He topped Melbourne's goalkicking in 1960 with 38 goals and went on to coach the club during the 1970s. Ronald Dale Barassi Jr. (born 27 February 1936) is a former Australian rules footballer, coach and media personality. Regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of the game, Barassi was the first player to be inaugurated into the Australian Football Hall of Fame as a "Legend", and is one of three Australian rules footballers to be elevated to the same status in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. When Barassi was five years old, his father, Melbourne Football Club player Ron Barassi Sr., died in action at Tobruk during World War II. Hassa Mann
Harold Peter "Hassa" Mann (born 09 October 1940) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for and captained Melbourne in the VFL during the 1960s. He earned the name Hassa when he was a toddler, from his cousin and future Melbourne footballer Len Mann. A centreman, Mann was recruited from Rutherglen, Victoria and made his debut for Melbourne in their premiership season of 1959. He was a premiership player again the following season and went on to become the club captain in 1965, a position he kept for four seasons. Mann finished in the top 10 of the Brownlow Medal count four times, including placing equal 7th in 1966 and equal 5th in 1967.
