Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. The Monroes (Norwegian Band)
The Monroes were a Norwegian pop/ska duo, consisting of singer Lage Fosheim and guitarist Eivind Rølles. They recorded four successful studio albums between 1983 and 1993, before disbanding. Initially strongly influenced by English ska band Madness, their debut single "Sunday People" reached number one on the Norwegian charts in 1983. Their music rapidly evolved into a more laidback, melodious pop style, and they reached number one again with "Cheerio" in 1985, also charting in the U.S. Their 1985 album "Face Another Day" is regularly featured on critics' lists of Norway's best pop/rock albums ever. The Monroes were noted for their strong melodies, polished musical arrangements, and Lage Fosheim's clear vocals and distinctly British-sounding accent. Both members died of cancer in 2013. Sigurd Køhn
Sigurd Eystein Køhn (6 August 1959 – 26 December 2004) was a Norwegian jazz saxophonist and composer. Career Køhn was born in Kristiansand, Norway, and started playing the violin and the clarinet at the age of 9, and begun playing the alto saxophone when he was 14. He moved to Oslo when he was 19 years old, and became quickly a part of the city's jazz life. In the 1980s, he played the saxophone with different fusion and soul bands ("Lava", "Son of Sam", "The Heavy Gentlemen" and more), but he returned to the jazz in the 1990s. He played with the jazz quartet The Real Thing from 1992 until his death, in addition to his own "Sigurd Køhn Quartet" from 1994 and "Køhn/Johansen Sextet" from 1999. In 1996, Køhn's first record under his own name was released, ''More Pepper, Please''. Bjørn Ole Rasch
Bjørn Ole Rasch (born 28 July 1959) is a Norwegian artist (keyboards performer), composer, arranger and producer. He is a professor of popular music at the Agder University College. With his wife, Annbjørg Lien, he runs the Kongshavn Studios in Kristiansand. Career Rasch was born in Elverum and raised in Kristiansand. He began playing the piano at seven and learned much piano technique from his mother. He was taught classical music for eight years before he bought his first synthesizer and became more interested in composing and arranging. 19 years old, he composed music for a theater performance of the folktale "Manndottera og kjerringdottera", and he continued to compose music for the theater some years after this, among others 3 ballets and two more theater plays among them the first performance of J.R.R. TNT (Norwegian Band)
TNT is a Norwegian heavy metal band from Trondheim, formed in 1982. The band has released fourteen studio albums, three EPs and four live albums while going through numerous line-up changes since its formation. Guitarist Ronni Le Tekrø is the only consistent member of TNT. TNT has sold between 4-5 million albums worldwide as of 2016. History 1980s and 1990s TNT was formed in the Norwegian city of Trondheim in 1982, by vocalist and rhythm guitarist Dag Ingebrigtsen, guitarist Ronni Le Tekrø, bassist Steinar Eikum and drummer Diesel Dahl. Securing a national record contract with PolyGram subsidiary Vertigo Norway, they released their self-titled debut album the same year — their only album that features Norwegian lyrics — and got a hit with the single "Harley-Davidson". Diesel Dahl
Morten "Diesel" Dahl (born 19 June 1959 in Trondheim, Norway) is the drummer and co-founder of the Norwegian hard rock band TNT. He started playing the drums at the age of 15, and played in bands like Burn, Edge and Hotlips before he formed TNT together with vocalist Dag Ingebrigtsen in 1982. Dahl played on the first three TNT albums and co-wrote their biggest hit, " 10,000 Lovers (In One)", before he parted ways with the band in the fall of 1987. The following year he formed the band TinDrum, who got a national number 1 hit with "Drums of War". In the early 1990s Dahl joined the local Hells Angels motorcycle club in Trondheim and became their spokesperson. Throughout the 1990s he played in various bands, such as Diesel Dahl & Friends and Diezel, before he officially reunited with TNT in 2000. He left Hells Angels in 2005. Odd Magne Gridseth
Odd Magne Gridseth (born 27 April 1959 in Ørsta, Sunnmøre, Norway) is a Norwegian musician (bass), known from the Trondheim music scene. Biography Gridseth was regular bassist in the band «Soundtrip» together with guitarist Ove Bjørken, drummer Ernst-Wiggo Sandbakk and keyboardist Jan Gunnar Hoff, a collaboration that was continued with the ensemble «Trondheim Bop-service», which included Ernst-Wiggo Sandbakk, Odd André Elveland (tenor saxophone), Ove Bjørken, Torgeir Andresen (trumpet) and Kåre Kolve (alto saxophone). He was also part of Kjersti Stubø Band, and achieved international fame through being part of Siri Gellein's Svaleband (1987–), while attending the Jazz program at Trondheim Coservatory og Music (NTNU). Elin Rosseland
Elin Rosseland (born 5 April 1959 in Norway) is a singer, bandleader, and composer who studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music and is known from collaborations with Vigleik Storaas, Johannes Eick, Sidsel Endresen, Eldbjørg Raknes, Christian Wallumrød, and Johannes Eick. Nils Jansen
Nils Jansen (born 30 March 1959 in Haugesund, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz musician (saxophone and clarinet), known from several recordings and jazz orchestras. Career Jansen attended the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonservatorium (1995–98), and joined band like Ellipse, Per Husby Quintet, "Trondheim Big Band" and Søyr. After moving to Oslo, he has played within orchestras like "Radiostorbandet", med Espen Rud Sextet, Trygve Seim Ensemble, Magni Wentzel Sextet, "Sharp 9", and musicians like Christina Bjordal, Staffan William-Olsson and Håkon Storm. Lava (band)
Lava (established 1977 in Årdal, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz-rock band, known from a series of recordings in the 1980s (Polydor Records). Career The initiators Per Hillestad (drums), Svein Dag Hauge (guitar) were joined by Kjell Hestetun (bass) and Stein Eriksen (keyboards) and released the jazz funk influenced album ''Lava'' (1980), with contributions from Geir Langslet (keyboards) and Olav Stedje (vocals). When Hestetun and Eriksen left the band, the quartet Hauge, Hillestad and Langslet and bassist Rolf Graf continued releasing the album ''Cruisin'' (1981), with contributions by Per Kolstad (piano), Sigurd Køhn (saxophone) and Marius Müller (guitar), and the track «Take Your Time» became Norway and Europe hit. Their third album was ''Prime Time'' (1982) with Egil Eldøen as new vocalist accompanied by Sidsel Endresen on one track. Per Hillestad
Per Hillestad (born 25 March 1959 in Øvre Årdal, Norway) is a Norwegian musician (drums) and record producer, known as drummer in Lava and was contributing in releases by a-ha, Vamp, Jonas Fjeld, Bjølsen Valsemølle and Marius Müller. Career Hillestad founded "supergroup" Lava in Årdal 1977, together with Kjell Hestetun, Stein Eriksen and Svein Dag Hauge. From 1980 Lava released a series of albums receiving very good reviews. They were awarded Spellemannsprisen in 1984 for the album ''Fire'', and has been nominated for the award several times. Lava has among others toured together with the vocalist Randy Crawford in Australia, Asia and Africa. Hillestad also played on albums by Vigdis Eidsvåg (''Mørk Og Mjuk'' 2000), D.D.E.
