1959 British West Indies Championships
The 1959 British West Indies Championships was the third edition of the track and field competition between British colony nations in the Caribbean. It was held in Georgetown in British Guiana. A total of 27 events were contested, twenty-one by men and six by women. This was the first time that women had been able to compete at the event. Three new men's events were added to the programme: 3000 metres steeplechase, half marathon, and the 3000 metres walk. The British West Indies Championships was an annual track and field competition between nations involved in the West Indies Federation and several other Caribbean nations with a British colonial history. Like the federation itself, the competition was short-lived: first held in 1957, it ceased after 1965. Melville "Mel" Spence (2 January 1936 – 28 October 2012) was a Jamaican sprinter who competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics and in the 1964 Summer Olympics. He is the twin brother of Mal Spence, an Olympic sprint medalist. Mal Spence
Malcolm A. E. "Mal" Spence (2 January 1936 – 30 October 2017) was a Jamaican athlete who mainly competed in the 400 metres. His twin brother Melville also competed in track and field. Malcolm died five years and two days after his brother. Spence competed for the British West Indies in the 1960 Summer Olympics held in Rome, Italy, where he won the bronze medal in the men's 4x400 metres relay with his teammates James Wedderburn, Keith Gardner and George Kerr. Curiously, there were two people named Malcolm Spence running the 400 meters distance at both the 1956 and the 1960 Olympics, both getting a bronze medal in 1960. Malcolm Spence from South Africa took the bronze medal in the Open race, while the South African relay team finished in fourth, one second behind Mal Spence's British West Indian relay team. Wilton Jackson (born 15 November 1935) is a Trinidad and Tobago sprinter. Wilton Jackson took part in the 4 x 440 yards relay at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff. Trinidad and Tobago did not qualify for the final. Representing the British West Indies, Jackson took bronze in the 4×100 metres relay at the 1959 Pan American Games. At the 1962 Central American and Caribbean Games, Jackson took part in both relay events with the Trinidad and Tobago team, winning silver in both events. He competed in the men's 100 metres at the 1964 Summer Olympics, finishing fifth in his heat with a time of 10.6 seconds. Denis Johnson (athlete)
Dennis Osric Johnson OD (6 May 1939 – 22 April 2021) was a Jamaican sprinter who equalled the world record, 9.3 seconds, for the 100-yard dash in 1961. Johnson later became a coach and advisor, and the architect of the Jamaican athletics programme. Track career Born in Jamaica in 1939, Johnson traveled to the United States for his college education. He studied at San Jose State College (now San Jose State University), where he was coached by the legendary sprints coach Bud Winter and was a member of the San Jose State Spartans track team. Michael George Raymond Agostini (23 January 1935 – 12 May 2016) was a Trinidadian track and field athlete. He was the first athlete from his country to win a gold medal at what is now known as the Commonwealth Games, when he won the 100 yards final in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on 31 July 1954. Erskine Anton Norris (born 7 January 1940) is a former Barbadian high jumper. Athletic career Norris was born in Kirtons, Saint Philip, and first represented Barbados at the 1962 Central American and Caribbean Games in Kingston, Jamaica where he won silver in high jump with a jump of 1.98 metres. Three months later at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia, Norris won bronze in the high jump clearing the bar at . In doing so, he became the first athlete to win a bronze medal for Barbados and the first athlete to win a medal of any colour in a sport besides weightlifting for Barbados at the Commonwealth Games. Wendell Adrian Mottley ORTT (born 2 July 1941) is a Trinidad and Tobago economist, politician and athlete. Mottley served as Senator and member of the House of Representatives with the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament and was Minister of Finance from 1991 to 1995. He was a Ivy League sprinter, winning two Olympic medals in 1964. Early life and education Mottley was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. He was the youngest of four brothers who were all runners. As a youngster, he began to run in competitions sponsored local oil companies. He attended Queen's Royal College, an elite public high school in Port of Spain. Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, KNH (9 December 1910 – 28 June 1999) was the first Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. His son, Lester Bryant Bird, succeeded him as Prime Minister. In 1994 he was declared a national hero. He was an officer in the Salvation Army for 2 years. In 1943, he became the president of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union. He achieved national acclaim politically for the first time when he was elected to the colonial legislature in 1945.
