1959 Basketball World Cup
The 1959 FIBA World Championship was the 3rd FIBA Basketball World Cup, FIBA World Championship, the international basketball world championship for men's teams. It was hosted by Chile from 16 to 31 January 1959. Amaury Pasos, Amaury Antônio Pasos was named the MVP. The hosting cities for the competition were Antofagasta, Concepción, Chile, Concepción, Temuco, Valparaíso, with the final stages being held at the capital of Santiago de Chile, Santiago. The final stages were supposed to be held at the newly constructed Movistar Arena, Metropolitan Indoor Stadium, but because the venue was not finished in time the games were postponed by a year from the original date and moved outdoors to the Estadio Nacional de Chile, configured in a way that the games were seen by a crowd of 16,000. Jorge Alessandri
Jorge Eduardo Alessandri Rodríguez (; 19 May 1896 – 31 August 1986) was the 27th President of Chile from 1958 to 1964, and was the candidate of the Chilean right in the crucial presidential election of 1970, which he lost to Salvador Allende. He was the son of Arturo Alessandri, who was president from 1920 to 1925 and again from 1932 to 1938. Early years Jorge Alessandri was born in Santiago. Wlamir Marques (born July 16, 1936), also known simply as Wlamir, is a Brazilian former basketball player and coach. He is considered to be one of the best Brazilian basketball players of all time, and to have been one of the best players in the world during the 1960s. Alongside fellow countrymen Amaury Pasos, Algodão, and Rosa Branca, he led the best basketball generation Brazil ever had. At a height of 1.85 m (6'1") tall, he played at the small forward position.
