The 1959 Australian Championships was a tennis tournament that took place on outdoor Grass courts at the Memorial Drive, Adelaide, Australia from 16 January to 26 January. It was the 47th edition of the Australian Championships (now known as the Australian Open), the 12th held in Adelaide, and the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. Grand Slam (tennis)
The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam". Neale Fraser
Neale Andrew Fraser (born 3 October 1933) is a former number one amateur male tennis-player from Australia, born in Melbourne, Victoria, the son of a Victorian judge. Fraser is the last man to have completed the triple crown, i.e. having won the singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles at a Grand Slam tournament, which he managed on two consecutive occasions, in 1959 and 1960 (both times at US National, now known as US Open); no male player has equalled this feat at any Grand Slam tournament since. After his playing days were over, he was non-playing captain of Australia's Davis Cup team for a record 24 years. Biography He was the son of barrister and politician Archibald Fraser. The 1959 French Championships (now known as the French Open) was a tennis tournament that took place on the outdoor clay courts at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, France. The tournament ran from 19 May until 31 May. It was the 63rd staging of the French Championships, and the second Grand Slam tennis event of 1959. Mary Reitano
Mary Carter Reitano (''née'' Carter; born 29 November 1934) is a former tennis player from Australia. As a junior player she won the girls' singles title at the Australian Championships in 1951 and 1952. Reitano won the singles title at the 1956 Australian Championships, defeating Thelma Long in the final in three sets after surviving a match point in the third set. At the 1959 Australian Championships Reitano won her second singles title after a straight-sets victory in the final against Renée Schuurman. Lorraine Coghlan Robinson (née Coghlan; born 23 September 1937) is a former tennis player from the state of Victoria in Australia. In 1956, she won the Australian Championships Girls' Singles title. Coghlan teamed with Bob Howe to win the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon in 1958. Coghlan and Howe were also the runners-up in mixed doubles at the 1958 French Championships. Robert (Bob) Howe (3 August 1925 – 30 November 2004) was an Australian tennis player. His main successes were achieved in the doubles competition. Don Candy
Don Candy (31 March 1929 – 14 June 2020) was an Australian tennis player who was mainly successful in doubles. At the Grand Slam tournaments he reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Championships singles event in 1952 and 1959. In the singles event at the French Championships he reached the eighth-finals in 1956 and 1960. In June 1951 Candy won the singles title at the Kent Championships, a grass court tournament held in Beckenham, defeating Gardnar Mulloy in three sets. The next year, 1952, he again reached the Kent final but on this occasion lost in three sets to Ham Richardson. In July 1951 he won the Midlands counties men's singles title after a straight sets victory in the final against Naresh Kumar from India. In 1956 he won the Men's Doubles title at the French Championships. With his American partner Bob Perry he won against compatriots Ashley Cooper and Lew Hoad in three straight sets.
