League Of Ireland
The League of Ireland ( ga, Sraith na hÉireann), together with the Football Association of Ireland, is one of the two main governing bodies responsible for organising association football in the Republic of Ireland. The term was originally used to refer to a single division league. However today the League of Ireland features five divisions – the Premier Division, the First Division, U19 Division, U17 Division, U15 Division and starting U13 Division. The League of Ireland has always worked closely with the FAI and in 2006 the two bodies formally merged. All the divisions are currently sponsored by Airtricity and as a result the league is also known as the SSE Airtricity League. Paddy O'Rourke (association Footballer)
Patrick O'Rourke (1 January 1934 17 January 2011) was an Irish professional footballer who played as an forward in the League of Ireland, most notably for St Patrick's Athletic. O'Rourke was brought up in the Inchicore neighbourhood of west Dublin and played youth football for local side Bulfin United. In 1953 he signed for League of Ireland outfit St Patrick's Athletic, also located in the Inchicore area. With the Saints, O'Rourke would win two league championships and two FAI Cups. The 1955-56 League season would see O'Rourke and strike partner Shay Gibbons net a combined haul of 38 goals for the Saints. In 1958, he won two caps for the Ireland B team, one at home against South Africa B and the other away to Iceland. On 12 September 1961, O'Rourke was Pats only goalscorer in a 4-1 loss away to Dunfermline Athletic in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. In January 2011 St Patrick's Athletic announced the death of O'Rourke. Austin Noonan
Austin Noonan (16 July 1933 – 7 November 2022) was an Irish football player and manager who played for Cork Celtic and Cork Hibernians in the League of Ireland. He also served as manager of Cork Hibernians. Career Noonan first played football as a schoolboy with Maymount. Considered too small and light as a youth player, he later played with Colmcille's and Ballinlough before being selected on the Cork AUL. Noonan signed for Evergreen United (later Cork Celtic) for the 1953–54 season. He formed a close goal-scoring partnership with Donie Leahy and, after spending much of the 1958-59 season on the sideline with a troublesome right ankle injury, was the league's overall top scorer with 27 goals the following season. Noonan was honoured by the League of Ireland XI selectors on a couple of occasions, while his other honours include Top Four Cup, Shield, Dublin City Cup and Munster Senior Cup winners' medals. Christy Doyle
Christy Doyle was an Irish footballer who played as a forward for Shelbourne FC from 1957 to 1961, scoring 36 goals in 60 League of Ireland appearances. Doyle helped Shelbourne to their FAI Cup victory in 1960 as they defeated Cork Hibernians 2–0 in the final at Dalymount Park. Doyle won two caps for the Republic of Ireland B national team scoring on both appearances (against Iceland and South Africa) and won a single cap for the senior team against Czechoslovakia. He also won two inter-league caps against the Irish League (scoring) and the English Football League. Liam Tuohy (footballer)
Liam Tuohy (27 April 1933 – 13 August 2016) was an Irish footballer and manager. During the 1950s and 1960s, Tuohy played as an outside left for Shamrock Rovers, Newcastle United, and the Republic of Ireland. In 1959, while playing for Ireland, Tuohy scored the first ever goal in the history of the European Championship. After retiring as a player, Tuohy became a coach and managed several clubs in the League of Ireland including Shamrock Rovers, Dundalk, and Shelbourne. He also managed the Republic of Ireland. In July 1973, he also took charge of the Shamrock Rovers XI that played Brazil in a prestige friendly, and during the 1980s, he successfully coached the Republic of Ireland U-19s. He subsequently served as a director of football at Home Farm, before retiring in 2002. Gerald Asher Moore (8 October 1903, London – 29 January 1993, Twickenham) was an English jazz pianist. Moore spent the years 1922-1939 working freelance in London, playing movie palaces and nightclubs. Among the clubs in which he worked are Sherry’s (1925–26), the Empress Rooms (1927), Chez Rex Evans (1933–34), the Bag o’ Nails (1932–36), the 43 Club (1934–35), and Mema’s (1934–39). His first live appearance on BBC radio in September 1936 was heralded in ''The Radio Times'' with a listing as "Britain's 'King of Swing'". James Patrick Dunne (16 March 1935 – 1983 or 1984) was an Irish footballer. The son of Irish international Jimmy Dunne, Jimmy Dunne the younger played for St Patrick's Athletic with his brother Tommy, winning the 1959 FAI Cup. Peter Fitzgerald (footballer)
Peter Joseph Fitzgerald (16 June 1937 – 29 June 2013) was an Irish professional footballer. A centre forward Fitzgerald was one of the famous six Waterford brothers who played for the Waterford Blues. Tommy, Jack, Ned, Denny and Paul were the others. Along with Alfie Hale he made a scoring League of Ireland debut at Kilcohan Park on St Patrick's Day 1957 in a 3–1 win over Bohemians.
