1958 Missouri Tigers Baseball Team
The 1958 Missouri Tigers baseball team represented the University of Missouri in the 1958 NCAA University Division baseball season. The Tigers played their home games at Rollins Field. The team was coached by Hi Simmons in his 20th season at Missouri. Led by All-Americans Sonny Siebert, Bo Toft and Ray Uriarte, the Tigers advanced to the 1958 College World Series, where they lost to Southern California in the championship game. Hi Simmons
John "Hi" Simmons (August 16, 1905 – January 12, 1995) was the head baseball coach at the University of Missouri from 1937 until 1973. During his tenure, Missouri won one national championship, finished runner-up three other times, appeared in six College World Series and won 11 conference titles. Simmons' Missouri team won the 1954 College World Series and finished as runners-up in 1952 College World Series, 1952, 1958 College World Series, 1958 and 1964 College World Series, 1964. He also served as a football assistant coach under Don Faurot. Simmons was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1977, the University of Missouri Hall of Fame in 1990, and is also a member of the ABCA Hall of Fame. The field at Taylor Stadium is named Simmons Field in his honor. He died and is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia, Missouri. 1958 College World Series
The 1958 NCAA University Division baseball tournament was played at the end of the 1958 NCAA University Division baseball season to determine the national champion of college baseball. The tournament concluded with eight teams competing in the College World Series, a double-elimination tournament in its twelfth year. Eight regional districts sent representatives to the College World Series with preliminary rounds within each district serving to determine each representative. These events would later become known as regionals. Each district had its own format for selecting teams, resulting in 26 teams participating in the tournament at the conclusion of their regular season, and in some cases, after a conference tournament. The College World Series was held in Omaha, NE from June 13 to June 19. The twelfth tournament's champion was Southern California, coached by Rod Dedeaux. Big Eight Conference
The Big Eight Conference was a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)-affiliated Division I-A college athletic association that sponsored football. It was formed in January 1907 as the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA) by its charter member schools: the University of Kansas, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, and Washington University in St. Louis. Additionally, the University of Iowa was an original member of the MVIAA, while maintaining joint membership in the Western Conference (now the Big Ten Conference). The conference was dissolved in 1996. The season progressed through the regular season and concluded with the 1958 College World Series. Sonny Siebert
Wilfred Charles "Sonny" Siebert (born January 14, 1937) is a former Major League Baseball right-handed pitcher from 1964 to 1975. He finished with a record of 140-114 and a 3.21 ERA. He threw a no-hitter on June 10, 1966, against the Washington Senators. He was drafted simultaneously by the Cleveland Indians and the St. Louis Hawks of the NBA. Amateur career Siebert attended Bayless Senior High School, and the University of Missouri and played on the 1958 team that lost in the College World Series finals in 12 innings. He was selected to the CWS All Tournament Team that year. Professional career Siebert signed with the Cleveland Indians as an outfielder, and it was two years into his minor league career that Indians pitching coach Spud Chandler convinced Siebert to try pitching. Rosenblatt Stadium
Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium was a baseball stadium in Omaha, Nebraska, the former home to the annual NCAA Division I College World Series and the minor league Omaha Royals, now known as the Omaha Storm Chasers. Rosenblatt Stadium was the largest minor league baseball stadium in the United States until its demolition ( Sahlen Field now holds the record). The final College World Series game at Rosenblatt Stadium was played on June 29, 2010. The final game for the Royals in the stadium, and under the Royals name, was played on September 2, 2010, with the Royals defeating the Round Rock Express.
