1958 FIFA World Cup
The 1958 FIFA World Cup was the sixth FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams, and was played in Sweden from 8 to 29 June 1958. It was the first FIFA World Cup to be played in a Nordic country. Brazil beat Sweden 5–2 in the final in the Stockholm suburb of Solna to claim their first title. The tournament also marked the arrival of a then 17-year-old Pelé on the world stage. This was the first appearance of Wales at the FIFA World Cup and they would not qualify for another until 64 years later. There were also debut appearances for Northern Ireland and the Soviet Union. Host selection Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Sweden expressed interest in hosting the tournament. Federico Vairo
Federico Vairo Moramarco Angellastre (27 January 1930 – 7 December 2010) was an Argentine football defender who won three consecutive league titles with River Plate and represented Argentina at the 1958 World Cup. His younger brother Juan Apolonio Vairo Moramarco also played football professionally, including one season for Juventus. Early life Federico Vairo was born in Rosario, Argentina. Club career Vairo started his career at Rosario Central in his home city in 1947, he played for the club for 8 seasons before moving to Buenos Aires to play for River Plate. River won three consecutive league titles between 1955 and 1957. Vairo played for the Argentina National team at the World Cup held in Sweden in 1958. Horst Eckel
Horst Eckel (8 February 1932 – 3 December 2021) was a German footballer. He was part of the West Germany national team that won the 1954 FIFA World Cup. He was the last surviving player of the 1954 World Cup Final. Club career Eckel debuted in 1. FC Kaiserslautern's first team in 1947 at the age of 15. He won the German football championship with Kaiserslautern in 1951 and 1953. Eckel was playing as a right half back. As a player, Eckel was assiduous and adroit. Because of his rapid way of playing, he got the nickname ''Windhund'' ( sighthound). He later played for SV Röchling Völklingen in the Regionalliga Südwest. Georg Stollenwerk
Georg Stollenwerk (19 December 1930 – 30 April 2014) was a German footballer and trainer. His career started with SD Düren 99. From 1953 to 1966 he played for 1. FC Köln as defender and midfielder. The member of the German 1958 FIFA World Cup squad won 23 caps and scored two goals. He also represented Germany at the 1952 Summer Olympics. Stollenwerk began his international career in 1951 playing as an inside right linkman. He proved to be a versatile player, being used in every position, including goalkeeper. Erich Juskowiak
Erich Juskowiak (7 September 1926 – 1 July 1983) was a footballer who played as a left-back. He earned 31 caps and 4 goals for the West Germany national team between 1951 and 1959. He played in the World Cup Finals in 1958 where West Germany reached the semi-final. Career Juskowiak was born in Oberhausen. Herbert Erhardt
Herbert "Ertl" Erhard (6 July 1930 – 3 July 2010), also known as Herbert Erhardt, was a German footballer who played as a defender. Club career Erhard played for SpVgg Fürth and Bayern Munich. He was known for his hard tackling, doggedness and captain-like performances. The German Football Association lists Erhardt in the top 20 best German defenders of all time, and Bayern Munich included him in their best 16 in a team made up in the 1980s of famous past players. Fritz Herkenrath
Friedrich "Fritz" Herkenrath (9 September 1928 in Cologne – 18 April 2016) was a football goalkeeper for West Germany at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. He earned 21 caps between 1954 and 1958. He took his club team Rot-Weiss Essen to the peak of its history and won a national championship in 1955. The following season, Rot-Weiss Essen became the first German side to qualify for the European Cup. Initially, Herkenrath played handball. He started out as a right winger and only later became a goalkeeper. Soon after World War II, Herkenrath switched from handball to football. Guillermo Stábile
Guillermo Stábile (17 January 1905 – 26 December 1966) was an Argentine professional football player and manager who played as a centre forward. At club level, Stábile won two national championships with Huracán and played in Italy and France. He was the top scorer of 1930 World Cup, the inaugural iteration of the tournament. Alfredo Hugo Rojas Delinge, nicknamed ''El Tanque'' (born 20 February 1937 in Lanús, Buenos Aires Province) is a former professional Argentina, Argentine Association football, football player.
