1958 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship
The 1958 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship was the 27th staging of the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament for boys under the age of 18. Meath entered the championship as defending champions, however, they were defeated in the Leinster Championship. On 28 September 1958, Dublin won the championship following a 2-02 to 0-8 defeat of Mayo in the All-Ireland final. The Dublin County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coiste Contae Átha Cliath) or Dublin GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in the Dublin Region and the Dublin county teams. Hunterstown Rovers GAC
Hunterstown Rovers is a Gaelic football ( GAA) club located in Ardee, County Louth, Ireland. The club's pitch is located about 3 kilometres south of Ardee on the main Dublin-Derry Road ( N2). Hunterstown has teams at all age levels starting from U5's through to senior level. History The club was founded in 1941. After challenge matches against the O'Mahony's and Collon, the club affiliated with the Louth County Board in 1941, playing their first competitive match in March of that season in the Second Division Championship at Dunleer. They won this match, against St. Colmcille's, Togher, on a scoreline of 2-4 to nil. In their next outing however, Hunterstown lost in Dunleer. In that season, Rovers won their section of the Ranafast Cup only to fall to Kilcurry in the competition's semi-final stages. Newtown Blues are a Gaelic Athletic Association club from Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland. The club fields Gaelic football teams in competitions organised by Louth GAA. They are the most successful club in Louth GAA. Newtown Blues hold the record for the most Louth Senior Football Championships won in Gaelic football history. Dundalk Gaels GFC is a GAA club from Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland which fields Gaelic football teams in competitions organized by Louth GAA. Catchment area The club recruits members from such neighbourhoods as the Carrick Road, Avenue Road, Hill Street, Dublin Road and the Friary school area. Many past and present players of the Gaels were educated at Friary National school. Current status Managed by Cathal O'Hanlon, Gaels are currently the only Dundalk town club competing at senior championship level in Louth football. Their Division 1 League status was lost however after a relegation play-off defeat to Dreadnots in October of 2022. Roche Emmets GFC is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club that was founded in 1947. It fields gaelic football teams in competitions organised by Louth GAA. Located in Rathduff outside the town of Dundalk, a short distance from the historic Roche Castle, the club draws its support from the neighbouring parishes of Kilcurry and Faughart in north Louth. Noel Fox (Gaelic Footballer)
Noel Fox (born 1940) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played for club side St. Vincent's and at inter-county level with the Dublin senior football team. Career Fox first came to prominence on the inter-county scene during a three-year stint with the Dublin minor team. He won an All-Ireland Championship in his final year in 1958 when Mayo were beaten in the final. Promotion to the Dublin senior team followed. Fox won back-to-back Leinster Championship medals in 1962 and 1963, and he was part of the Dublin squad that won the 1963 All-Ireland final by defeating Galway. He ended his career with a third provincial winners' medal in 1965. Brian McDonald (Dublin Gaelic Footballer)
Brian McDonald (born 1941) is an Irish retired Gaelic footballer who played for club side Synge Street P.P. ( since 1999 now called Templeogue Synge Street ) and at inter-county level with the Dublin senior football team. Career Born in Dublin, McDonald first enjoyed success as a schoolboy with CBS Roscommon, with whom he won Connacht Colleges Championship medal. His performances earned inclusion on the Roscommon minor teams as a dual player, however, he subsequently lined out with the Dublin minor team that won the All-Ireland Championship in 1958 when Mayo were beaten in the final. McDonald won a second successive title from centre-forward the following year before winning an All-Ireland Junior Championship title in 1960. Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. Des Foley
Desmond Foley (12 September 1940 – 5 February 1995) was an Irish Gaelic footballer and hurler of the 1950s and 1960s. He was also a politician and represented Fianna Fáil in Dáil Éireann. Sports Desmond Foley was born into a farming family at Kinsealy, County Dublin in 1940. As a young man he showed particular skill at Gaelic games, winning four Dublin County Senior Hurling Championships with the St Vincents GAA club, having earlier captained the school team of St Joseph's, Fairview which brought the All-Ireland Colleges football title to Dublin for the first time. Foley captained the Dublin minor football team which won the All-Ireland Final in 1958. In 1962 he became the only player in history to play in two provincial Railway Cup finals, in hurling and football, on the same day, winning medals in both codes for Leinster. Mick Kissane
Michael Kissane (born 1941) is an Irish retired Gaelic footballer who played for club side St. Vincent's and at inter-county level with the Dublin senior football team. Career Kissane first enjoyed success as a schoolboy with St Joseph's, with whom he won a Leinster Colleges Junior Championship title. His performances quickly brought him to the notice of the county selectors and he was left wing-back on the Dublin minor team that won the All-Ireland Championship in 1958 when Mayo were beaten in the final. Kissane captained the team to a second successive title the following year before lining out with the Dublin junior team in 1960. He dropped out of Gaelic football the following year but was coaxed out of his premature retirement and made his Dublin senior team debut in the National League against Louth in November 1962. Paddy Holden
Patrick A. Holden (born 1940) was an Irish retired Gaelic footballer who played for club side Clanna Gael and at inter-county level with the Dublin senior football team. Career Holden's performances at club level for Clanna Gael quickly brought him to the notice of the county selectors and he was full-back on the Dublin minor team that won the All-Ireland Championship in 1958 when Mayo were beaten in the final. Promotion to the Dublin junior team followed, however, he was deprived of a winners' medal in that grade by Fermanagh in 1959. Holden had been training with the Dublin senior team since October 1958 and made his debut in the National League against Roscommon in the autumn of 1959.
