The 1957–58 Football League, 1957–58 season was Port Vale F.C., Port Vale's 46th season of football in the English Football League, and their first full season (eighth overall) back in the Football League Third Division South, Third Division South following their Promotion and relegation, relegation from the Football League Second Division, Second Division. Football League Fourth Division
The Football League Fourth Division was the fourth-highest division in the English football league system from the 1958–59 season until the creation of the Premier League prior to the 1992–93 season. Whilst the division disappeared in name in 1992, the 4th tier of English football continued as the Football League Third Division, and later became known as Football League Two. The Dell in Milton Road, Southampton, Hampshire, England was the home ground of Southampton F.C. between 1898 and 2001. New stadium Since 1896, Southampton had been tenants of Hampshire County Cricket Club at the County Ground, having vacated the Antelope Ground in the summer of 1896. Alan Martin (footballer, Born 1923)
John Alan Martin (23 November 1923 – 2004) was an English footballer who played as a half-back and inside-forward. A pacey and intelligent player, he scored 94 goals in 292 league appearances in eleven years in the Football League. He began his career at Port Vale, turning professional in December 1942. He was sold to Stoke City in exchange for Albert Mullard and £10,000 in September 1951, and played First Division football for the "Potters". He spent 1955 to 1957 at Bangor City, before re-joining Port Vale in July 1957. He helped the "Valiants" to win the Fourth Division title in 1958–59, before moving on to Northwich Victoria. Bert Carberry
Robert Carberry (born 6 January 1931) was a Scottish footballer who played as a half-back in the Football League for Norwich City, Gillingham, and Port Vale between 1953 and 1958. Career Carberry played for Avondale, before joining Norwich City in 1953, who were then managed by Norman Low. He made five Third Division South appearances in 1953–54 and 1954–55 before departing Carrow Road. After spending 1955–56 in the Southern League with Bedford Town, he signed with Archie Clark's Gillingham, and featured once in the Third Division South in the 1956–57 season. He joined league rivals Port Vale in July 1957, in a move that reunited him with Norman Low, and his debut came at centre-half in a 1–0 away triumph at Aldershot on 24 August. Keith Jones (23 October 1928 – 25 August 2007) was a Welsh international footballer. A goalkeeper, he made 295 league appearances in a 13-year career in the Football League, and won one cap for Wales in 1949. He spent May 1946 to July 1957 at Aston Villa, and made 199 appearances in all competitions, though was usually the club's second choice goalkeeper. He was sold on to Port Vale for £3,500, and helped the "Valiants" to win the Fourth Division title in 1958–59. He moved on to Crewe Alexandra in April 1959, before leaving the club the following year.
