Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Njål Vindenes
Njål Vindenes (born 17 July 1957 in Vinnes, Norway) is a Norwegian classical musician (guitar and lute) residing in Bergen, Norway. Biography Vindenes started his formal musical education on the music program at U. Pihls high school in Bergen, with guitar as the main instrument (1973–76). There after he studied guitar first with a Bachelor's degree at the Bergen Musikckonsevatorium (1976–1980), and later earning a Master's degree at the Norwegian Academy of Music (1980–1983). Musician and cider enthusiast Vindenes have invested much time and money in developing a fruity Norwegian apple cider. Now five thousand bottles are put up for sale at Vinmonopolet. Vindenes is Professor at the Bergen University College and assistant professor at the Grieg Academy. Runar Tafjord
Runar Tafjord (born December 14, 1957 in Langevåg, Norway) is a Norwegian French horn player, brother of the tubaist Stein Erik Tafjord, and uncle of the French horn player Hild Sofie Tafjord. He is best known for being part of The Brazz Brothers. Career Tafjord is a graduate of the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. He has for many years played in various Scandinavian orchestras, including Oslo Filharmoniske Orkester, Den Norske Operas Orkester, Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester and 'Gothenburg Philharmonic Orchestra'. He is also a widely used solo artist and studio musician and is one of only five chosen Scandinavian horn players who play jazz. In addition, he is a highly sought after orchestra conductor and instructor for brass ensembles. In 2011 he received the "Statens arbeidsstipend" from the Norwegian government. Morten Halle
Morten Halle (born 7 October 1957) is a Norwegian jazz musician (saxophone), composer and music arranger. He was born in Oslo, and he is known from the city's jazz scene and from a series recordings. (in Norwegian) Career Halle participated in various small bands at the Oslo Jazz scene in the late 1970s, when he studied music at the University of Oslo 1981–86, he was with the band Cutting Edge, and from 1987 in a quartet with John Eberson (guitar), Bjørn Kjellemyr (bass), and Finn Sletten/Pål Thowsen (drums). He has also played with the big band Oslo 13, with Knut Værnes Band, Jon Balke, Søyr, Chipahua and Geir Holmsen Band. ''Verdens Gang'' ("The course of the world"), generally known under the abbreviation ''VG'', is a Norwegian tabloid newspaper. In 2016, circulation numbers stood at 93,883, having declined from a peak circulation of 390,510 in 2002. Dance With A Stranger (band)
Dance with a Stranger is a Norwegian rock band from Kristiansund. Biography The band was founded in Bergen 1984 and had great success until they parted in 1994. Since then they have had a few reunion concerts, as well as releasing compilation CDs. In 2013 bassist Yngve Moe died in an accident. The band still completed their farewell tour in 2014, now joined by Per Mathisen on bass. Yngve Moe
Yngve Moe (4 October 1957 – 17 April 2013) was a Norwegian bass guitarist and founding member of the rock band Dance with a Stranger. Career He started his career in the band Erter, Kjøtt og Flesk (1971–1975), in his home town of Tromsø. The band broke up in February 1975 after a job in Skien where they were support act for Fairport Convention. During one of the breaks, one of the band members was caught stealing a raw steak, and since Moe was not yet 18 years old, the legal age for prosecution in Norway, he was brought home by his father, ending the band's career. In 1978, Moe moved to Bergen with fellow musicians and friends Bjørn Vassnes and Turid Pedersen, the latter two starting the band Nøkken together with Hans Petter Gundersen. Moe later joined "Nøkken" as a concert musician. During the same time he also played with HP Gundersen's band "Rust". Ernst-Wiggo Sandbakk
Ernst-Wiggo Sandbakk (born 28 September 1957) is a Norwegian jazz musician (drums) and music tescher. Known from a series of concerts, festival performances and records with the likes of DumDum Boys, Thorgeir Stubø, Frode Alnæs, Palle Mikkelborg, Terje Bjørklund, Vigleik Storaas, Bjørn Alterhaug, Nils Petter Molvær, Knut Riisnæs, John Pål Inderberg, Sondre Meisfjord, Jan Gunnar Hoff, Kjersti Stubø and Henning Sommerro. Career Sandbakk was born in Kjeldebotn, Ballangen. He appeared on Thorgeir Stubø's first album ''Notice'', later establishing himself in Trondheim, where he teaches on the Jazz programat at the Trondheim Musikkonservatorium, where he holds an instrumental teaching degree from 1982. In addition he is Associate professor at the Musikkonservatoriet i Tromsø, and has also written several textbooks on drumming like ''Hvordan spille moderne trommesett'', to mention one.
