1957 Merdeka Tournament
The first edition of the Merdeka Tournament was held in August and September 1957 in Malaya (now Malaysia). It was won by Hong Kong League XI. Singapore won a consolation tournament for teams that did not qualify for the final round. First round A series of knockout ties was held to determine which teams would compete in the second round. The match between South Vietnam and Singapore required a replay as the score was level at the end of the first match. First Round Replay Second round The winning teams from the first round played a series of matches against one another. The team finishing top of the group was the tournament winner. Consolation Tournament The losing teams from the first round played a series of matches against one another as a consolation tournament. Hong Kong League XI
The Hong Kong League XI, also known as the Hong Kong XI or Hong Kong League Selection, is a football team which represents the Hong Kong First Division League in exhibition matches, mainly the Lunar New Year Cup. The team is selected from the top players in the Hong Kong First Division League. Both Hong Kong and foreign players, including those from mainland China, can be included in the team. However, as the quality of local players is usually lower, it has been often that most of the outfield players are foreigners. In recent years, to order to enable local footballers to gain more international experience, the Hong Kong Football Association has fielded the Hong Kong national football team in matches which were previously played by the Hong Kong League XI. Rahim Omar
Rahim Omar (1934 - 19 February 1990) was a Singaporean football player who played as a striker. Early life Rahim studied at St Andrew School in Singapore. Football career Omar played for the Singapore national football team. Outside of football Rahim worked at the Singapore Telephone Board. Abdul Ghani Minhat
Abdul Ghani bin Minhat ( Jawi: عبدالغاني منحة; 23 December 1935 – 28 September 2012) was a football player who represented the team Selangor FA and Negeri Sembilan FA in the 1950s until the late 1960s. He played as a striker and winger while representing Malaya and Malaysia. He was known as the Raja Bola (Malay for King of ball) and is considered one of Malaysia's greatest football players. Early life Datuk Ghani Minhat was born on 23 December 1935 in Kampung Solok, Rantau, Negeri Sembilan. Ghani later attended Princess Road School (now Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Raja Muda) at the age of 10 in 1945. He represented the school football team and only played bare footed. Peter Corthine
Peter Alan Corthine (born 19 July 1937) was a footballer who played as an inside forward. Born in England, he represented Singapore at international level. Career Corthine began his career at non-league club Leytonstone. After leaving Leytonstone, Corthine played domestic football in Singapore, whilst in the country with the British Army. In December 1957, Corthine signed for Chelsea. Corthine made two appearances for Chelsea, both in 1959, in losses against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal. In March 1960, Corthine signed for Southend United, scoring 24 goals in 73 league games during his time at the club. After leaving Southend, Corthine dropped back into non-league football, playing for Gravesend & Northfleet, Chelmsford City, Clacton Town and Ramsgate Athletic. International career Corthine represented Singapore whilst on national service in the country.
