1957 Los Angeles Mayoral Election
The 1957 election for Mayor of Los Angeles took place on April 2, 1957. Incumbent Norris Poulson was re-elected with minimal opposition. Poulson had stated that he would retire from the office before changing his mind and filing for re-election; County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, President of the Los Angeles City Council John S. Gibson Jr., and advertising executive Don Belding all withdrew after Poulson made his announcement. Four candidates still ran to defeat Poulson, but Poulson won outright in the primary election. Municipal elections in California, including Mayor of Los Angeles, are officially nonpartisan; candidates' party affiliations do not appear on the ballot. Norris Poulson
Charles Norris Poulson (July 23, 1895 – September 25, 1982) was an American politician who represented Southern California in public office at the local, state, and federal levels. He served as the 36th Mayor of Los Angeles, California from 1953 to 1961, after having been a California State Assemblyman and then a member of the United States Congress. He was a Republican Party (United States), Republican though the office of mayor is officially nonpartisan. Early life and career Charles Norris Poulson was born in Baker County, Oregon. He was the son of Peter Skovo Poulson (1843-1928) who was an immigrant from Denmark. Poulson attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, Corvallis for two years before he wed Erna June Loennig on December 25, 1916. The couple arrived in Los Angeles in 1923. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors (LACBOS) is the five-member governing body of Los Angeles County, California, United States. History On April 1, 1850 the citizens of Los Angeles elected a three-man Court of Sessions as their first governing body. A total of 377 votes were cast in this election. In 1852, the Legislature dissolved the Court of Sessions and created a five-member Board of Supervisors. Kenneth Hahn
Kenneth Hahn (August 19, 1920 – October 12, 1997) was a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for forty years, from 1952 to 1992. Hahn was on the Los Angeles City Council from 1947 to 1952. He was an ardent supporter of civil rights throughout the 1960s, and met Martin Luther King Jr. in 1961. Early life Hahn was born August 19, 1920, in Los Angeles, the son of Hattie Louise (Wiggins) of Nottawa, Canada, and John Heinrich Hahn.
