1957 Detroit Lions Season
The 1957 Detroit Lions season was the franchise's 28th season in the National Football League (NFL) and their 24th as the Detroit Lions. Under first-year head coach George Wilson, the Lions won their fourth and most recent NFL title. In the penultimate regular season game with the Cleveland Browns on December 8, hall of fame quarterback Bobby Layne was lost for the season with a broken right ankle. With backup Tobin Rote in at quarterback in the second quarter, the Lions won that game and overcame a ten-point deficit at halftime the following week to defeat the Chicago Bears 21–13, whom they had lost to three weeks earlier at home. They ended the regular season with three consecutive wins and an 8–4 record. All four losses were within the Western Conference, splitting the two games with all but the Green Bay Packers, whom they swept. Marv Brown
Marvin Clifford Brown (August 15, 1930 – December 7, 2009) was a National Football League halfback with the Detroit Lions in 1957. He attended high school in Waco, Texas and William Adams High School in Alice, Texas. He was drafted in the 25th round (301st overall) by Detroit in 1953. Brown died December 7, 2009, of pancreatic cancer. Life Marvin Brown grew up in the Methodist Orphanage home in Waco, Texas from age 5-17. The home took Brown and his sister Alice in after they found them digging through trash cans in the area. Their mother was not able to take care of them and they were living with their grandfather who worked security at night and slept during the day. While at the Orphanage, Marvin met and was coached by J. M White. White had a large influence on Marvin's life. Gene Gedman
Eugene William "Gene" Gedman (January 9, 1932 – August 19, 1974) was an American football player, a running back for four seasons with the Detroit Lions of the National Football League, 1953 and 1956 through 1958. The Lions won league titles in 1953 and 1957. He served in the military during the 1954 and 1955 seasons. Born in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, a suburb southeast of Pittsburgh, Gedman graduated from Duquesne High School in 1949. He played college football at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he was the Hoosiers' captain and most valuable player (twice), and All-Big Ten. He played in the East–West Shrine Game and was selected by the Lions in the second round of the 1953 NFL draft, the fifteenth overall pick. During his fifth training camp, Gedman was waived by the Lions in mid-September 1959. Jerry Reichow
Garet Neal Reichow (born May 19, 1934) is a former professional American football player. A , 220 lb tight end from the University of Iowa, Reichow was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round of the 1956 NFL Draft. He was one of two Minnesota Vikings (along with Hugh McElhenny) selected to the Pro Bowl after their inaugural 1961 season. An All-Big Ten quarterback, Reichow starred at Iowa. He was the football team's MVP as a senior and left school as its all-time leader in total offense. The Detroit Lions took notice and selected Reichow, who also played in the 1955 basketball Final Four for Iowa, in the fourth round. Reichow contributed to the Lions’ 1957 NFL title as a receiver and back-up quarterback for Tobin Rote, who replaced the injured Bobby Layne as starting quarterback. 1957 Baltimore Colts Season
The 1957 Baltimore Colts season was the fifth season for the team in the National Football League and their first with a winning record. Under fourth-year head coach Weeb Ewbank, the Colts posted a record of 7 wins and 5 losses, third in the Western Conference, one game behind Detroit and San Francisco. With two games to play, Baltimore (7–3) was in first place with a one-game lead, but dropped their final two games on the West Coast. This was the first season in which the Colts wore their trademark "horseshoe" logo in the middle of their helmet.
