1956 United States Presidential Election In New Mexico
The 1956 United States presidential election in New Mexico took place on November 6, 1956. All 48 states were part of the 1956 United States presidential election. State voters chose four electors to represent them in the Electoral College, which voted for President and Vice President. New Mexico was won by incumbent President Dwight D. Eisenhower by a 16-point landslide. Running against Eisenhower was former Governor of Illinois Adlai Stevenson, whom Eisenhower had earlier defeated for the Presidency in 1952. This election reflected one of the last election cycles where the Democratic Party still had their post Civil War political domination of the Deep South. The Deep South or the Lower South is a cultural and geographic subregion in the Southern United States. The term was first used to describe the states most dependent on plantations and slavery prior to the American Civil War. Following the war, the region suffered economic hardship and was a major site of racial tension during and after the Reconstruction era. Harding County is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population was 695, making it the least populous county in the state, and the 14th-smallest county by population in the United States. Its county seat is Mosquero. The county is named for United States President Warren G. Harding, and was created (from parts of Union and Mora Counties) on the day of his inauguration as president on March 4, 1921, making him the last president to have a county named after him. Chaves County is a county in New Mexico, United States. As of the 2019 census, the population was 64,615. Its county seat is Roswell. Chaves County was named for Colonel Jose Francisco Chaves, a military leader there during the Civil War and later in Navajo campaigns. The county was created by the New Mexico Territorial Legislature on February 25, 1889, out of land from Lincoln County. Chaves County comprises the Roswell, New Mexico Micropolitan Statistical Area. Lincoln County is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,497. Its county seat is Carrizozo, while its largest community is Ruidoso. History Lincoln County was named in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. It was once the largest county in the United States. In the late 1870s the Lincoln County War began between ranchers and the owners of the county's largest general store. William Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid, became involved on the side of the ranchers after his friend and employer was killed. In the end, Bonney killed the county sheriff, a deputy, and the deputy that killed his friend. Several other people were slain in the conflict, which included the other leader of the rancher faction. Georgia Olive Cozzini (February 14, 1915 – October 10, 1983) was an American socialist politician. She is best remembered as the first woman to run for Governor of Wisconsin and for two consecutive runs as the Vice Presidential candidate of the Socialist Labor Party of America, appearing on the ballot in 1956 and 1960. Eric Hass (March 4, 1905 – October 2, 1980) was a four-time Socialist Labor candidate for President of the United States. Life Hass was of German and Danish ancestry, and was born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1905. He died of a heart attack in Community Hospital, Santa Rosa, California on October 2, 1980. State elections In 1942, he ran for New York State Attorney General. In 1944, he ran for U.S. Senator from New York. In 1950, 1958 and 1962, he ran for Governor of New York. Presidential elections In 1952, his running mate was Stephen Emery; in 1956 and 1960, Georgia Cozzini; and in 1964, Henning A. Blomen. He came in third place in 1964.
