1956 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The 1956 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1955–56 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season, the 9th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 15 and 17, 1956, and concluded with Michigan defeating Michigan Tech 7-5. All games were played at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Vic Heyliger captured his 6th and final National title with the Wolverines, all done in the first 9 years of the tournament. As of 2016 he stands as the coach with the most championships overall and the most with one team (6). Qualifying teams Four teams qualified for the tournament, two each from the eastern and western regions. The two best WIHL teams and a Tri-State League representative received bids into the tournament as did one independent school. Broadmoor World Arena
The Broadmoor World Arena was a skating rink and hockey arena located at The Broadmoor Resort & Spa in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Originally an outdoor equestrian center and riding academy, the building was enclosed and converted into an ice arena which opened in January 1938. It was the original home of the Colorado College Tigers hockey team, as well as the Broadmoor Skating Club, a major force in the figure skating community. The building served as the first home of the NCAA Hockey Championships, hosting the first ten Final Fours (1948–1957) and once more, in 1969. The arena served as host to the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in 1962. It also hosted the World Figure Skating Championships five times between 1957 and 1975. Tom Rendall
Thomas W. Rendall (August 11, 1933 – April 7, 2002) was a Canadian ice hockey center. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Rendall played for the 1951 Memorial Cup finalist and 1952 Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) champion Winnipeg Monarchs. He played on two MJHL championship teams. Rendall played college hockey at the University of Michigan from 1954 to 1957 and was a member of the 1954–55 and 1955–56 Michigan Wolverines men's ice hockey teams that won the 1955 and 1956 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournaments. As of 2014, Rendall is the only player in NCAA history to be named to the All-Tournament Team more than twice. After graduating from Michigan, Rendall played professional hockey. He played for the Oakville Oaks, Winnipeg Maroons, and Spokane Jets. He played for the Spokane Jets from 1967 to 1974 and was a member of Allan Cup championship teams in 1970 and 1972. Bob Schiller (ice Hockey)
Robert "Bob" Schiller is a Canadian retired ice hockey defenseman who won back-to-back National Championships for Michigan in the 1950s. Career Schiller was one of many Ontario-natives to be recruited by Vic Heyliger and helped to continue Michigan's 10-year run as an NCAA superpower. When he made the varsity team as a sophomore, Schiller helped the Wolverines establish themselves as one of the top defensive teams in the country and reach the NCAA tournament. Schiller was one of three Wolverines to earn AHCA Second Team All-American honors that year. In the tournament Schiller earned only a single assist but his defensive work earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Second Team. In his junior season the Michigan defense was nearly impenetrable and Schiller was again named an All-American. Joe McLean is a Canadian retired ice hockey center who was an All-American for St. Lawrence. Career In 1953 McLean, along with fellow Ottawa-natives Lee Fornier and Ron O'Brien all agreed to accept scholarships at nearby St. Lawrence University. The three built a tremendous working partnership during their year with the freshman team and when they debuted for the varsity squad in 1954 the trio provided the bulk of the Saints' offense. The sophomores were the top three scorers for the saints with O'Brien leading the team with 58 points. As of 2020 all three totals were in the top five for rookie performances in St. Lawrence history. The 69 combined goals from the 'Ottawa Connection' were more than half the total offense from the saints that season and was enough to get the Larries back into the NCAA tournament.
