Elections were held in Illinois on Tuesday, November 6, 1956. Primaries were held on April 10, 1956. The results strongly favored the Republican Party, which retained control both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly as well as all statewide elected executive offices. They also won the state in the presidential election, retained the U.S. Senate seat up for election, and flipped a single U.S. House seat. Warren Wright (politician)
Warren E. Wright (March 26, 1893 – March 29, 1962) was an American politician and businessman. Born in Murrayville, Illinois, Wright served in the United States Army during World War I. He owned an automobile dealership in Murrayville, Illinois and later in Jacksonville, Illinois. He was also in the hardware business. Wright was involved in the Republican Party. He served as Illinois state treasurer from 1941 to 1943 and from 1955 to 1957. Orville Enoch Hodge (October 1, 1904 – December 29, 1986) was the Auditor of Public Accounts (predecessor to the Office of Comptroller) of the state of Illinois from 1952 to 1956. During his term in office, he embezzled $6.15 million of state funds, mainly by altering and forging checks that were paid on the state's account. Lloyd Morey (January 15, 1886September 29, 1965) was an American educator and interim Illinois Auditor of Public Accounts (1956–1957). Born in Laddonia, Missouri, Morey went to the Gem City Business College in Quincy, Illinois. He then received his bachelor's degrees in English and music from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Michael J. Howlett Sr. (August 30, 1914 – May 4, 1992) was an American politician who served as the 24th Illinois Auditor of Public Accounts and 33rd Illinois Secretary of State.
