The 1956 Appalachian State Mountaineers football team was an American football team that represented Appalachian State Teachers College (now known as Appalachian State University) as a member of the North State Conference during the 1956 NAIA football season. In their first year under head coach Bob Broome, the Mountaineers compiled an overall record of 3–6, with a mark of 3–3 in conference play, and finished third in the NSC. Conference Carolinas, formerly known as the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) or the Carolinas Conference, is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) primarily at the Division II level. Phillips Field (Florida)
Phillips Field was a medium-sized stadium (maximum capacity approximately 20,000) located on the west bank of the Hillsborough River across from downtown Tampa, immediately adjacent to the University of Tampa. It opened on October 4, 1937, and served as the home for the University of Tampa's football team from 1937 to 1967. The facility was named for local businessman I. W. Phillips, who donated the land to the school so that the Spartans would not have to share nearby Plant Field, which was often unavailable due to its use for many different sports and community events. Besides "Tampa U" home games, Phillips Field hosted many other sporting events. Clinton is a city in Laurens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 8,490 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville– Mauldin– Easley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The 1956 Lenoir Rhyne Bears football team was an American football team that represented Lenoir Rhyne College (now known as Lenoir–Rhyne University) as a member of the North State Conference (NSC) during the 1956 NAIA football season. In their 11th season under head coach Clarence Stasavich, the team compiled a 10–0 record (6–0 against conference opponents), won the NSC championship, and outscored opponents by a total of 380 to 70. 1956 remains the only perfect season in the history of the Lenoir–Rhyne Bears football program. The Bears also had undefeated seasons in 1955 and 1960 in which their record was marred only by a single tie game. Fullback Harold Bullard led the team with 1,075 rushing yards and 96 points scored. Quarterback Dean Cline led the team in passing with 344 passing yards. Guard Arden Ray was selected as a second-team player on the 1956 Little All-America college football team.
