1956 All-Pacific Coast Football Team
The 1956 All-Pacific Coast Conference football team consists of American football players chosen by the Associated Press (AP) and the United Press (UP) as the best college football players by position in the Pacific Coast region during the 1956 NCAA University Division football season. The AP team was limited to players form the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) and was based on votes of football writers of AP member newspapers on the west coast. The UP team included players from non-PCC schools. The 1956 Oregon State Beavers football team won the PCC championship and placed two players on the first team: halfback Earnel Durden and tackle John Witte. Witte was a consensus first-team player on the 1956 All-America college football team. Stanford and Washington each placed three players on the first team. American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. The offense must advance at least ten yards in four downs or plays; if they fail, they turn over the football to the defense, but if they succeed, they are given a new set of four downs to continue the drive. Points are scored primarily by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone for a touchdown or kicking the ball through the opponent's goalposts for a field goal. Bob Newman
Bob Newman (born c. 1938) was an American football player. He played college football for Washington State Cougars football team from 1956 to 1958. He ranked second behind John Brodie among NCAA major college players with 1,240 passing yards in 1956. In 10 games during the 1957 season, he completed 104 of 188 passes for 1,391 passing yards and 13 touchdowns, and he also compiled 1,444 yards of total offense. He led the NCAA major colleges that year in total offense and ranked second in passing yards. He also led the Pacific Coast Conference in 1957 in pass completions (104), pass completion percentage (55.3%), and passing touchdowns (13). Newman was unanimously selected as a first-team player on the Associated Press' 1957 All-Pacific Coast Conference football team. Jim Matheny
Jim Matheny (born February 16, 1936) is a former American football center who played one season with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals in the 20th round of the 1958 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of California, Los Angeles and attended Pasadena High School in Pasadena, California. John Nisby
John Edward Nisby (September 9, 1936 – February 6, 2011) was an American football guard in the National Football League. He played professionally for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins, and was one of the first African American players to play for the Washington Redskins. Early life Nisby was born in San Francisco, California and attended Edison High School in Stockton, California. He played college football at San Joaquin Delta College and at the University of the Pacific. He earned his master's degree from the University of Oregon. Paul David Wiggin (born November 18, 1934) is a former American football player and coach who currently serves as the senior consultant for pro personnel with the Minnesota Vikings. After graduating from Stanford University in 1957, he spent his entire 11-year playing career as a defensive end with the Cleveland Browns until his retirement following the 1967 NFL season.
