1955 Scottish Representative Peers Election
An election for 16 Scottish representative peers took place on Monday 23 May 1955 at the Parliament House in Edinburgh. Procedure The venue for the meeting caused some difficulty as the general election was called for the week when the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland was due to meet; by tradition the Church would not meet on the day of the general election, which meant the only day for the Peers to meet was Monday 23 May. This was the day before the Church Assembly opened and the day on which the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland took up residence at Holyrood Palace, which was the normal location for the Peers to meet. Instead it was decided the peers should meet at Parliament House, built for the Parliament of Scotland but now part of the law courts. Robert Alexander Benjamin Hamilton, 12th Lord Belhaven and Stenton (16 September 1903 – 10 July 1961), was a Scottish soldier, colonial administrator, author, and peer. He was a Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. The son of Robert Hamilton-Udny, 11th Lord Belhaven and Stenton, by his marriage to Kathleen Gonville Bromhead, the young Hamilton was baptised Robert Alexander Benjamin. He was educated at Temple Grove School, Eastbourne, then at Eton College, before training for an army career at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. John ("Jack") Ogilvy Arbuthnott, 14th Viscount of Arbuthnott DL ( Montrose, 15 September 1882 – 17 October 1960), was a Scottish Viscount. David Ludovic George Hopetoun Carnegie, 11th Earl of Northesk (24 September 1901 – 7 November 1963) was elected a Scottish representative peer. Nigel Ivan Forbes, 22nd Lord Forbes (19 February 1918 – 5 March 2013), known as the Master of Forbes until 1953, was a Scottish soldier, businessman and Conservative politician. Brigadier James Roderick Sinclair, 19th Earl of Caithness, CVO, CBE, DSO (29 September 1906 – 8 May 1965) was a British Army officer during World War II and was also chief of Clan Sinclair. Sinclair joined the Gordon Highlanders and rose to the rank of Brigadier and as such led his regiment (part of the 51st (Highland) Division) through France, Belgium, the Netherlands into Germany during World War II and was decorated with the Distinguished Service Order and made Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
