The 1955 Houston Cougars football team was an American football team that represented the University of Houston in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) during the 1955 college football season The 1955 college football season saw the Oklahoma Sooners win the national championship after going 10–0–0. Although the final poll was taken before the postseason bowl games, Oklahoma played against the nation's other unbeaten and untied (10 .... Bill Meek
William Meridas Meek (August 14, 1920 – May 28, 1998)''Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014''. Social Security Administration. was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Kansas State University (1947–1950), the University of Houston (1951–1954), Southern Methodist University (1957–1961), and the University of Utah (1968–1973), compiling a career college football record of 78–88–7. Early life Meek was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, to Joseph A. Meek and Josephine E. Gaudiosi. His paternal grandmother was born in Germany, while his maternal grandparents emigrated from Italy. His family moved to Birmingham, Alabama, in his youth. In college, he earned three letters playing as a back-up quarterback for the University of Tennessee; he graduated in 1943. The 1955 Oklahoma A&M Cowboys football team represented Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (later renamed Oklahoma State University–Stillwater) in the Missouri Valley Conference during the 1955 college football season. In their first season under head coach Cliff Speegle, the Cowboys compiled a 2–8 record (1–3 against conference opponents), tied for last place in the conference, and were outscored by opponents by a combined total of 172 to 88. On offense, the 1955 team averaged 8.8 points scored, 144.1 rushing yards, and 81.7 passing yards per game. On defense, the team allowed an average of 17.2 points scored, 237.5 rushing yards and 64.8 passing yards per game.
