A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Phillip on 14 August 1954 because of the death of Tom Shannon (). Dates Candidates *Wal Campbell () was the proprietor and editor of ''The Rock'', an anti-catholic paper. He stated that his policies would be similar to Labor, however he was opposed to sectarianism in the party. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Electoral District Of Phillip
Phillip was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, in central Sydney and named after Arthur Phillip. It was originally created in the 1904 re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90. It consisted of part of the abolished seats of Sydney-Phillip and Darlington. It was initially south of Liverpool Street, east of George Street and City Road, north of Cleveland Street and west of Elizabeth Street. In 1920, with the introduction of proportional representation, it was absorbed into Sydney. Phillip was recreated in 1927 and abolished in 1981 and partly replaced by Elizabeth. From 1973 to 1981 it included Lord Howe Island. Tom Shannon (Australian Politician)
Thomas John Shannon (9 December 1884 – 9 June 1954) was an Australian real estate agent, alderman and state politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1927 until his death. He was variously a member of the Labor Party(ALP) and the Australian Labor Party (NSW). Early life and career Shannon was born in Redfern, New South Wales and was the son of a cab driver. He was educated to elementary level at St Benedict's, Broadway and worked as a grocer's boy and eventually as a real estate agent. He became involved with community organisations including the Hibernian Australian Catholic Benefit Society, a provider of social security insurance, and was elected as an Alderman on Sydney City Council between 1921 and 1927 and between 1930 and 1948. The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales's lower chamber of Parliament. The current Speaker is Jonathan O'Dea, who was elected on 7 May 2019. Traditionally a partisan office, filled by the governing party of the time, O'Dea replaced the previous Liberal Speaker Shelley Hancock, following the 2019 state election. Role The Speaker presides over the House's debates, determining which members may speak. Wal Campbell
John William Wallace "Wal" Campbell (27 November 1906 – 4 July 1979) was an Australian anti-Catholic journalist and refrigeration mechanic. Campbell was born in Johannesburg to John William Wallace Campbell, an Australian Boer War veteran, and Antonette Cholette, ''née'' Bleckmann. The younger Campbell, known as "Wal", came to Australia as an infant, and was a telegram delivery boy, a drover and a shearer. Ultimately he became a refrigerator mechanic. On 31 May 1940 Campbell enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, serving in the Middle East and Papua with the 2nd/4th Field Company of the Royal Australian Engineers. He was sent back to Australia in August 1943 after contracting malaria, and was discharged a sergeant on 23 October 1945. Sectarianism is a political or cultural conflict between two groups which are often related to the form of government which they live under. Prejudice, discrimination, or hatred can arise in these conflicts, depending on the political status quo and if one group holds more power within the government. Often, not all members of these groups are engaged in the conflict. But as tensions rise, political solutions require the participation of more people from either side within the country or polity where the conflict is happening. Pat Hills
Patrick Darcy Hills (31 December 1917 – 22 April 1992) was a New South Wales politician. He served in various high offices across the state most notably the Deputy Premier of New South Wales, Leader of the Opposition and as the Lord Mayor of Sydney. Early life Hills was born in the Sydney suburb of Surry Hills. He was educated at Marist Brothers High School, Darlinghurst and was apprenticed as an electrical engineer. He was an alderman on Sydney City Council from 1948 to 1956 and Lord Mayor of Sydney from 1953 to 1956. Political career Hills was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Phillip in 1954, representing the Labor Party; he held the seat till its abolition in 1981.
