1954 Macdonald Brier
The 1954 Macdonald Brier, the Canadian men's national curling championship, was held from March 1 to 5, 1954 at Edmonton Gardens in Edmonton, Alberta. A total of 32,000 fans attended the event. Team Alberta, who was skipped by Matt Baldwin became the third team to win Brier Tankard in their hometown as they finished round robin play with a 9-1 record. This was Alberta's fifth Brier championship and the first of three by Baldwin as a skip. At age 27, Baldwin would also at the time be the youngest skip to win a Brier. Edward Wilfred Taylor (29 April 1891-1 November 1980) was a British manufacturer of optical instruments. Biography Taylor was born on 29 April 1891 at 20 Bootham, York, to parents Charlotte Fernandes Taylor and Harold Dennis Taylor (a designer of optical instruments for Thomas Cooke & Sons). He attended a preparatory school at Orelton, Scarborough, before, at age 14, attending Oundle School. He left school in 1908 to take up an apprenticeship at Thomas Cooke & Sons in York. In 1912 he travelled to the US aboard to demonstrate rangefinder equipment to the US government. At the outbreak of the First World War, he enlisted in the 21st Battalion Royal Fusiliers and subsequently commissioned to the Sherwood Foresters as a range finding officer. Taylor subsequently served in the Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire) during the Battle of the Somme, where he was wounded. Curl Moncton Inc. is a curling club in Moncton, New Brunswick. History Curl Moncton traces its history back to the founding of the Moncton Curling Association (MCA) in 1881, and was located on Lower Lutz Street. The club was moved to Mechanic Street in 1903, but was destroyed in a fire in 1915. The club was then rebuilt on Lutz Street. Curl Moncton itself was formed in 2011 when the Beaver Curling Club and the Curling Beauséjour merged. The MCA joined Curl Moncton in 2013, when Curl Moncton purchased its site on Lutz Street to gain access to equity. The move was controversial, as it involved evicting the Humanity Project, which had been using the facility to help house and feed the homeless population.
