1954 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1954 municipal election was held October 13, 1954 to elect five aldermen to sit on Edmonton City Council and three trustees each to sit on the public and separate school boards. The electorate also decided seven plebiscite questions. No election was held for mayor, as William Hawrelak was one year into a two-year term. There were ten aldermen on city council, but five of the positions were already filled: Harold Tanner (SS), Rupert Clare, Abe Miller, Charles Simmonds, and Cliffard Roy (SS) were all elected to two-year terms in 1953 and were still in office. There were seven trustees on the public school board, but four of the positions were already filled: Mary Butterworth (ss), William Cowley, James Falconer, and John Thorogood (SS) had been acclaimed to two-year terms in 1953 and were still in office. Edmonton City Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. William Hawrelak
William Hawrelak (October 4, 1915 – November 7, 1975) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, the longest-serving mayor in Edmonton's history, and a candidate for election to the House of Commons of Canada. Early life Hawrelak was born in Wasel, Alberta to Ukrainian immigrants Wasel/William and Anastasia Hawrelak (the family's ancestral name was Гавриляк (''Havryliak'')). (Wasel was named after William's father.) He married Pearl Shandro (daughter of Alberta MLA Andrew Shandro, after whom Hawrelak's home district was named) the pair had three daughters. In 1945, Hawrelak moved to Edmonton and purchased the Prairie Rose Manufacturing Co., which made soft drinks. He served as president of the Alberta Farmer's Union and of the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues before entering politics. Abe William Miller
Abe William Miller (March 25, 1897 – September 30, 1964) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He served in office on both civic and provincial levels of government in the province of Alberta. He served as an Alderman for the city of Edmonton from 1951 to 1957 and as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1955 to 1959 sitting as a member of the Liberal caucus in opposition. Early life Abe William Miller was born in Hungary in 1897. He moved with his family to Canada in 1899 and later settled in the Edmonton area in 1914. James Falconer
James Falconer (9 June 1856 – 21 April 1931) was a Scottish solicitor and Liberal Party politician. Family and education Falconer was born in Carmyllie, Forfarshire, the son of Donald Falconer. He was educated at Arbroath High School and the University of Edinburgh where he obtained his MA degree. He married Ada Kennedy. February 1912 Edmonton Municipal Election
On September 27, 1911, the voters of Edmonton approved by plebiscite the amalgamation of Edmonton with Strathcona. A majority of Strathcona voters also voted in favour of amalgamation. Amalgamation was effected February 1, 1912. In anticipation of this, no election was held December 11, 1911 as would normally have been required (municipal elections in Edmonton at the time being held the second Monday of every December). Instead, elections were fixed for February 16, 1912. Positions to be elected With the amalgamation, Council's size was increased by two members, bringing the total number of aldermen to ten. Strathcona was a city in Alberta, Canada on the south side of the North Saskatchewan River. Originally founded in 1891, it amalgamated with the City of Edmonton in 1912. Ethel Sylvia Wilson
Ethel Sybella Wilson (February 13, 1902 - December 8, 1983) was a labour activist and a politician from Alberta, Canada. She served on Edmonton City Council from 1952 to 1966 and as Social Credit Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta (MLA) from 1959 to 1971. She served as a cabinet minister in the Social Credit governments of Ernest Manning and Harry Strom from 1962 to 1971. Early life Ethel Sybella Knight was born on February 13, 1902, on a farm just outside Sunnyside, Alberta. She took her post secondary education at Edmonton Business College. Frederick John Mitchell
Frederick John Mitchell (December 4, 1893 – December 25, 1979) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, a mayor of Edmonton, and a candidate for election to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Early life Fred Mitchell was born December 4, 1893, in Stratford, Ontario, but had his early education in Elmira. He attended the Berlin Collegiate and Technical Institute, and took up employment with the Elmira Furniture Co. Ltd. upon graduation. He later joined the Metropolitan Bank in Elmira as a stenographer before becoming a registered industrial accountant. In this capacity, he moved to Leross, Saskatchewan in 1913 to work for the Dominion Bank. He remained there until going overseas to serve in World War I. Upon his return, he moved to Edmonton and joined the staff of the G T P Railway. He subsequently joined Oliphant-Munson Collieries (later renamed Sterling Collieries Co.
