1953 Utah State Aggies Football Team
The 1953 Utah State Aggies football team was an American football team that represented Utah State University in the Skyline Conference during the 1953 college football season. In their third season under head coach John Roning, the Aggies compiled an 8–3 record (5–2 against Skyline opponents), placed second behind rival Utah in the Skyline Conference, and outscored all opponents by a total of 207 to 139. Offensive lineman Dave Kragthorpe receive first-team all-conference honors. (Kragthorpe later served as head coach at Oregon State from 1985 to 1990.) Earl Lindley led the NCAA with 81 points scored. 1953 Utah Redskins Football Team
The 1953 Utah Redskins football team was an American football team that represented the University of Utah as a member of the Skyline Conference during the 1953 college football season. In their fourth season under head coach Jack Curtice, the Redskins compiled an overall record of 8–2 with a mark of 5–0 against conference opponents, winning Skyline title for the third consecutive year. Utah played its first nationally televised game in the final game of the season, on November 26. NBC Sports televised 12 games during the season, making the BYU–Utah rivalry game played on Thanksgiving Day among the first nationally broadcast college football games. The 1953 Idaho Vandals football team represented the University of Idaho in the 1953 college football season. The Vandals were led by third-year head coach Raymond A. Curfman and were members of the Pacific Coast Conference. Home games were played on campus at Neale Stadium in Moscow, with two games in Boise at old Bronco Stadium at Boise Junior College. Led on the field by quarterback George Eidam, Idaho compiled a record and were winless in their three PCC games. The Vandals suffered another loss in the Battle of the Palouse with neighbor Washington State, falling, 30–13, at Neale Stadium on October 17. BYU–Utah State Football Rivalry
The BYU–Utah State football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Brigham Young Cougars and Utah State Aggies. They have met for the Old Wagon Wheel 65 times, dating back to 1948. However, the rivalry predates the Old Wagon Wheel trophy era. The rivalry series between the two schools was largely dominated in the early years by Utah State until 1974. For the next three decades, BYU generally dominated the series with BYU winning ten straight times before the Aggies defeated the Cougars 31–16 on October 1, 2010. With the victory, Utah State reclaimed the Old Wagon Wheel for the first time since 1993. The Old Wagon Wheel also returned to Utah State on October 3, 2014, when they beat BYU 35–20.
