The 1953 Tangerine Bowl was an American college football bowl game played following the 1952 season, on January 1, 1953, at the Tangerine Bowl stadium in Orlando, Florida. The game featured the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles and the East Texas State Lions (now Texas A&M University–Commerce). Background The Lions were champions of the Lone Star Conference after finishing their regular season 10–0, and they entered the bowl with an 18-game winning streak. Preston Vaughn Overall
Preston Vaughn "Putty" Overall (June 5, 1897 – January 1, 1974) was an American football player and coach of football, basketball, and baseball. He served as the head coach of football, baseball, and basketball at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute, now known as Tennessee Technological University. He came out of retirement in 1952 and coached Tech's football team, posting a 9–1 regular season record plus an invitation to the 1953 Tangerine Bowl. Overall played football at Middle Tennessee State, where he was captain of the 1917 team, as well as one year with Dan McGugin's Vanderbilt Commodores, in 1921. ''The First Fifty Years: A History of Middle Tennessee State College'' tells us "During his Murfreesboro days, "Putty Overall" was a hulking giant of two hundred and seventy-five pounds who required custom-made uniforms." The Texas A&M–Commerce Lions football team (formerly the East Texas Lions and East Texas State Lions) is the college football program representing Texas A&M University–Commerce. The Citrus Bowl is an annual college football bowl game played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The bowl is operated by Florida Citrus Sports, a non-profit group that also organizes the Cheez-It Bowl and Florida Classic. The 1960 Tangerine Bowl (December) was an American college football bowl game played following the 1960 season, on December 30, at the Tangerine Bowl stadium in Orlando, Florida. The Citadel Bulldogs of the Southern Conference defeated the of the Ohio Valley Conference by a score of 27–0. It was the second of two Tangerine Bowls played in calendar year 1960. A halfback (HB) is an offensive position in American football, whose duties involve lining up in the offensive backfield and carrying the ball on most rushing plays, i.e. a running back.
