1953 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 7 March 1953 to elect the 75 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The Labor government was seeking its eighth continuous term in office since the 1932 election. It was the first electoral test for Vince Gair, who had become Premier of Queensland 14 months earlier after the death of Ned Hanlon. Key dates Results The result was a considerable swing to the Labor government. : 737,579 electors were enrolled to vote at the election; however, 11 seats (14.7% of the total) were uncontested, eight of them Labor-held seats representing 49,466 enrolled voters, as well as two Country seats representing 20,053 voters and one Liberal seat representing 10,711 voters. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Electoral District Of Roma
Roma was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1950 to 1992. It was named after the town of Roma, and comprises largely areas from the abolished districts of Dalby and Maranoa. Roma was mostly a safe seat for the Country/National party, and was the seat of Premier Russell Cooper. It was abolished in the 1991 redistribution under the Goss government, and its territory distributed between the new district of Western Downs and the existing district of Warrego. Bill Baxter (Queensland Politician)
William Edward Baxter (1907–1978) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life William Edward Baxter was born on 29 May 1907 in Chinchilla, Queensland, the son of Catherine Baxter. He attended Chinchilla State School. He married May Reardon on 29 Sep 1929; the couple had 2 daughters. He worked for Queensland Railways as a cleaner and clerk. Politics At the 1953 state election, Baxter successfully contested the electoral district of Norman as a candidate of the Labor and entered the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He held the seat in the 1956 and 1957 elections. At the 1960 election, he successfully contested the neighbouring seat of Hawthorne, which he retained in 1963. Louis Luckins
Louis Wells Luckins (24 June 1885 – 6 July 1970) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Luckins was born in Springsure, Queensland, the son of Louis Wells Luckins Snr and his wife Bridget Mary (née Armitage). He was educated at Mount Morgan State School and after leaving school he served in the Natal Civil Service from 1903 to 1906. He fought in the Native Rebellion there in 1906 where he was awarded the medal and clasp before heading to China where he was an officer in the Chinese Maritime Customs from 1907 to 1914. He fought in the Chinese Revolution of 1911 and received a Chinese decoration by the Viceroy of Canton for saving lives in the 1907 typhoon in China. After receiving Imperial Customs appointments in Batavia, Singapore, Philippines and Western Australia he came to Brisbane in 1917 where he was a valuer and real estate agent until 1944. Charles Bernard English (1902–1974) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Charles English was born 30 January 1902 as Goonengerry near Lismore, New South Wales, the son of James English and his wife Catherine Jane (née Buckley). Robert Hodgson Watson (12 October 1896 – 26 March 1959) was an Australian politician who served as a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Watson was born in Yorkshire, England, the son of William Watson and his wife Elizabeth Ann (née Forster) and came to Australia at an early age. Mulgrave is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The district in its present form is a narrow coastal strip running from the southern suburbs of Cairns at its northern end to Innisfail at its southern end. Bunny Adair
Herbert Arthur "Bunny" Adair (23 August 1905 – 10 October 1994) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Herbert Arthur Adair was born 23 August 1905 at Wolfram Camp, Queensland, Australia, the son of Cecil Henry Adair and his wife Helen (née Barratt). Adair was educated at state schools in Herberton, Wolfram and Aloomba and at the Mount Carmel College, Charters Towers. In 1926, he moved to Freshwater where he resided for the rest of his life. He had a varied career as a miner, canecutter, cane farmer, contract carrier and publican. During World War II, Adair served in the 2nd Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF), Armoured Division, and 17 Field Regiment, 5th Division. Carlisle Wordsworth
Carlisle Favell Wordsworth (21 October 1908 – 7 May 1960) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Wordsworth was born in Mount Molloy, Queensland, the son of Arthur John Wordsworth and his wife Lillian Justitia (née Carlisle). He was educated at Gordonvale State School and did night classes at Cairns High School before starting his working career as a locomotive fireman and engine driver at the Mulgrave Central Mill from 1923 until 1925. He then worked at the Mulgrave Cooperative Sugar Mill from 1929 until 1940 at which time he joined the Second Australian Imperial Force, working as a liaison officer with the United States army. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of major and after working for the International Boring Company as a traveler he was an industrial advocate for the Queensland Cane Growers Association and District Secretary of the Cairns Cane Growers Association. Electoral District Of Cook
Cook is an electoral district in Queensland, Australia. Cook covers the vast Cape York Peninsula north of Cairns, including the resort town of Port Douglas and the Torres Strait Islands. It is named after British navigator James Cook, who charted the coast and landed on Possession Island – one of the Torres Strait islands – in 1770.
