1953 New Mexico Lobos Football Team
The 1953 New Mexico Lobos football team represented the University of New Mexico in the Skyline Conference during the 1953 college football season. In their first season under head coach Bob Titchenal, the Lobos compiled a 5–3–1 record (3–2–1 against Skyline opponents), finished fourth in the conference, and outscored all opponents by a total of 154 to 103. New Mexico center Larry White was selected by the Associated Press (AP) as a first-team player on the 1953 All-Skyline Conference football team. Three other New Mexico players received second-team honors: end Ray Guerette, guard Ralph Matteuchi, and tailback Bobby Lee. Lee ranked third in the Skyline Conference with 624 rushing yards on 110 carries (5.7 yards per carry). Bob Titchenal, who had previously been an assistant coach for Denver, was selected by the AP as the Skyline Conference coach of the year. Arizona–New Mexico Football Rivalry
The Arizona–New Mexico football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Arizona Wildcats and New Mexico Lobos. They have met 67 times on the football field. Arizona leads the series 44–20–3. Kit Carson Rifle From 1938 to 1990, the winner of the rivalry took ownership of the Kit Carson Rifle. The gun is a Springfield Model 1866 rifle that is rumored to have once belonged to the famous frontier scout, Kit Carson. Game scores from each game are carved into the stock of the rifle. Prior to the 1997 Insight.com Bowl, the two schools announced that they would retire the rifle due to concerns of its history of violence against Native Americans and it has not been used during any subsequent games between the two schools. Colorado Field
Colorado Field was an outdoor college football stadium in the western United States, on the campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Opened in 1912, it was the home of the CSU Rams of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) through 1967. Constructed entirely by the students and faculty in 1912, Colorado Field was the first football field in the state of Colorado to have grass sod on the playing surface. The New Mexico–New Mexico State football rivalry, known as the Battle of I-25 and the Rio Grande Rivalry in all sports, is an annual football game between the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University. It is called the Battle of I-25 because the two universities are located along Interstate 25 connecting Albuquerque and Las Cruces. In the entire history of the rivalry, the game has never been contested anywhere beside those two cities. Series history The rivalry between New Mexico's only two NCAA Division I institutions dates back to January 1, 1894 – eighteen years before New Mexico achieved statehood – when the schools met in a football contest in Albuquerque.
